Question How to recover iPhone files?

So, I was using my iPhone (an old 3gs with an old iOS 4 something I think), when the battery died. Typically no big deal as once it is plugged in it starts charging...

Well, instead of charging and rebooting, I'm hit with an iTunes logo. Plugging the phone into the PC/iTunes tells me that my phone needs to be restored to its original settings before it can be used, and it goes on to say that all media will be erased from the phone. Ack!

Is there a way, or some other software, to manually access the storage of the phone to retrieve the pictures stored on the phone?

Thanks folks!

Your phone is in what's known as "recovery mode", all you need to do is; on your computer download "tinyumbrella" from http://blog.firmwareumbrella.com/ (links are on the left). run the program, plug in your phone and then click on "exit recovery mode" and you should be good.

EDIT;
There's a link on that site that says "fix recovery (OS)", i've never heard of that, but i know my method works, so use my way.
