I'm going to Adelaide, Australia at the beginning of November to compete in the World Lifesaving Championships.

How best to tackle the jet lag/time difference? I was thinking about switching my days/nights the week before... but with the 2 days of travel/time change will this even help? Or just try to sleep on the plane (yeah, right!) and set my watch to Adelaide time right before I hop on the plane?

I only have a day and a half before my first race, and I don't want to messed up and waste my whole trip because I wasn't prepared enough.

I dealt with an 8 hour time difference by staying awake on arrival day until local bed time. The one time I arrived at 8am, and had to power through until 10 pm until I just couldn't stay awake anymore. The worst thing you can do is take a nap in the afternoon. I did that once, and for the next few days, I was waking up at 2am and not able to fall back asleep until 6.

If you're lucky, you'll arrive later in the day, and you'll be sufficiently tired by bed time, so that you can just go to sleep as usual, and wake up at a normal hour.

This is what I did when I went to Australia and it worked well for me.

I got to Melbourne at about noon, and struggled to stay awake until 10, but when I woke up the next morning, I was acclimated.

I leave out of LA around 9 pm on Nov 4 and get to Adelaide (with a stop over in Sydney for 1.5 hours) on Nov 6 at noon. Just sleep on the LA-Sydney flight?

Looking for a decent coffee shop in the Bowness/Montgomery area that would be open later (ie 4pm-10pm).

Any suggestions?

What are the general rules for asking out a girl in your university class mid-semester?

Icould see it being incredibly awkward for a few reasons. What if it doesn't work out? What happens the next week of classes? Do you sit next to her? Everyone will notice and it'll be embaressing.

Advice or stories would be cool.

I asked out the cute girl that sat next to me in History last year. When things went south she simply switched spots with another classmate. Nothing changed; there was no embarrassment involved.

If she turns you down, don't fret. Unless you're openly and publicly sharing your feelings about this woman, nobody is going to care if you and her aren't sitting together anymore.

I've dated a couple girls from classes. The first one turned out to be not all that great. We were in a project group together and when things didn't go well (it was my fault) it definitely got a little tense, I wouldn't say awkward though. The other one I am currently still seeing so we'll see what advice I have to give following that scenario. Shes not in any other classes, and Im actually done school now so It doesnt really count I guess.

My advice would be to go for it. Who cares you're young. If it doesnt work out at worse you have a couple months of awkward glances in class, but on the flip side, you could be getting laid. Seems worth it to me.

Also, I have a thread in the Tech Forum but I think most of those guys are usually too busy playing vids ot answer questions of the layman like me haha. I have a USB recording mic that is having a problem with the USB input. Where can I take this to get it fixed? I was at Memory Express yesterday and they wouldn't even look at it.

How long is a piece of string?

There is no set answer.

I used to do McKenzie Towne to Kennsington in 30-45 mins.

He's probably looking for an answer like:

Worst-case scenario - ____ minutes
Best-case scenario - ____ minutes
Average - ____ minutes

If the conditions are bad it takes about an hour if you take Deerfoot all the way. If you can get past Ivor Strong before 7am, it is much quicker.

I haven't taken Deerfoot in a long time though, so that info might be dated. Barlow -> Shepard Rd-> Ogden Rd -> 26th Ave -> MacLeod Tr is how I go.

When I went to Auckland a couple of years ago, I found that the jet lag wasn't as bad as I expected. Because of the long flight, the massive time difference, and the dateline, my entire concept of date and time was completely reset, I think!

I'd try and sleep on the LA/Sydney flight as it'll be overnight anyway. By the time you arrive in Australia you'll be starting a whole new day. A really early, weird day. But I'd get some sleep while you can on that flight, plus it will help with the boredom.

Coming home was more difficult for me, and it seemed to take a week to get back into the groove here. I find that going W-E is tougher than going E-W, but I don't have any science to back it up - just my own experience.

As with most things concerning women, the rules are there to be broken.

I dated a girl that was in 3 of my classes in one semester and when things went south (she was a psycho) it was very tense and awkward.

I highly recommend not dating someone in your classes but that advice is less and less relevant the hotter the girl is.
