Or do you get STB for other TV's in the house that extend the PVR functionality to those other TV's?

Pause live tv is on the pvr box tv only for now. This may be resolved in future patches, I give it good chance to happen.

So essentially you have the "base" PVR that has full functionality and other STBs connected to other TV's that can access the content of what's stored on the PVR, but don't include the same functionality? ie) can't record whatever is playing on that TV

No, it Will record and view recorded content; just not pause live tv. Yet.

Well that's not 100% true. If you're currently recording a live tv show you can pause, rewind, and fast-forward (up to "live") just like on the PVR box.
You just have to tell the box to record the live show you're watching, then immediately go choose it through the "recorded TV" menu.

It's a huge hassle to switch (if you do Internet, TV, and Phone all at once), and switching back if I wasn't happy with the TV quality or the speed of the Internet would really REALLY suck.
|
Most TELUS stores (at the malls and such) should have a set up to play with.

Yes, the other STBs access the content on the PVR. If you wanted to, you could set a show to record, and watch it on the non-PVR STB if you wanted to pause, RW etc...
There is an update coming that will enable you to pause and such on the non-PVR STBs coming shortly. As well as a few other features.

Channel Bundles fill me all kinds of rage.
Seems like I'd be paying more for my current channel set up if I switched to Telus.

Contracts are optional. You can sign up month to month
The Internet will take a small hit but as an example I do 14 mega bits with one hd stream. When have 2 going and a sd stream I can slow to 12-ish. No bigs. The service is solid.

PsnaP will have to fill in the exacts, but I know when I switched over to Optik, my total bandwidth capacity went up so any extra the TV may use is more than taken into account with the upgrade. The other benefit is when you aren't watching TV, the total bandwidth coming into your house is available to your PC.
In my case, when taping at least one HD show, watching another HD show and another TV watching SD - I can honestly not tell a difference compared to no TV bandwidth being used.

Im starting to think youre a TELUS employee. haha
I cant remember what the exact number are but yes, when more TVs are being used will eat up some bandwidth, but not much. You shouldnt notice any real slow downs. On the old platform, an HD stream would take up 7 megs. But if you didnt have the TV on, the internet wouldnt use that bandwidth, but on the new Optik platform it can.

I'm in Sunnyside, and have had Optik and its predecessor for about 18 months. Very pleased with DL speeds, uploads can be a little here and there, but on a torrent with a decent ratio getting 1-1.5 Mb/s is pretty standard.
The TV system itself, unlike Shaw, actually looks and behaves like a product of the 21st Century. No major complaints, except booking an installation, I had to wait close to a month, my brother and another friend got it installed recently and had it done in under 5 days each. That and I wish I could get SD to output natively so I could use a better upscaler than the box, then again, what I watch in SD gets less and less all the time.
Edit, the installer also laid down as much ethernet cable as I needed, even though it would have been easier to do coax, he said it the convenience wasn't worth the trouble coax could be. This included putting in a new phone jack so the modem was conveniently located for me.

I can say that running a torrent will mess up the service... just be weary of that in case you run into trouble.

no. you dont need to sign a contract for anything except free pvr rental for 3 years. or a discount on a STB for less than 3 yeras. say you want just 1 330 non recording box... that's a free rental on a 2 year term

My #1 complaint, by far, is that the hold music always starts with "Single Ladies" by Beyonce. Every time. And Telus never answers in time for me not to hear the entire thing. It makes me want to hurt Telus people.
My #2 complaint is that I've had to call so often in my first 6 weeks of service. It took 3 visits to get my installation fully complete. Recording didn't work the first day. The router admin regularly craps out (one specific page won't be accessible until I hard-reset the modem), and my first bill was full of mistakes (getting charged rental for hardware I own, etc.)
Aside from that (and the totally featureless and slow router) - all is well
