Now, in your example you are just over-tipping.
If your bill is $12.12, we can assume this is $11.54 before 5% sales tax. So from this if you want to tip 15% = $1.73. (and yes, I would adjust to even it out, but she can have the excess change). So $1.88 is OVER 15% and 15% is a pretty normal tip for average/good service.
Now if you leave her with $15 even, you are tipping her 25%!
And your $18 move is 51% ...
Do what you want, but don't call us cheap while you continue to give no motivation for bad servers to up their game...
Now as another question, what do you tip taxi drivers, pizza guys, and hair-cutters?
|
We're talking about amounts less than $20 here. These are the annoying amounts that are really only two or three drinks that she had to serve while we take up a table.
It doesn't mean that I go around dropping $75 on $50 tabs all the time.
And I didn't mean to call you cheap, I just don't see how anyone can scoop a dollar out of a $2.88 tip. I really don't care about percentages. I tip amounts just feel right. A $23 dollar tab garners $7 change. I'd leave her a fiver, not a toonie. Probably both if the service was good.
I guess I figure that since I only find myself in tipping situations two or three times per week, saving 2 bucks each time doesn't really add up to much for me, but for the person making minimum wage plus tips, it adds up alot faster for her. So why not?
Besides all the reasoning, I have three sisters that are/were in the industry and a couple of ex g/fs that waitressed. I guess I've just seen and heard enough of their stories to know that waitressing isn't exactly easy money.

Tipping is somewhat a flawed system. I dont understand tipping on the BILL price. Say I have steak and lobster and 2 johnny walker blue scotches that bill is easily 100. Now do I tip her the required 20 dollars for 3 seconds of walking?
I dont have a problem tipping someone good who is hauling drinks upon drinks back and forth to the table, but I almost am a "effort tipper" if that makes any sense. Anyways I always give 20 usually which is terrible IMHO in some cases and upwards to around 25 to smoking hot girls with forgein accents who serve me food.

We've seen it mentioned in here a bunch of times: guys will give bigger tips to hot women.
I do it too. I don't know why.
"Hey baby, here's a couple extra bucks for being cute" is pretty much the message.
Seriously, what's the point of this? Do we think it will make the girl like us? I don't. Chances are you are gone by the time she gets the tip anyway. And even if you aren't, the bonus isn't going to get you anywhere.
An extremely hot girl who gives mediocre service probably always gets her 15 - 20%. A 30 year old guy who gives brilliant service is probably lucky to get his. This is an outrage! At least it is if you are a waiter who is not hot.

well just like tipping reinforces that I want good service and will keep the good ones while the others leave for lack of tips, so to will tipping keep the hot waitresses working while others leave frustrated with no tips. Eventually there will be only hot women left to bring me drinks.

It's because in the back of our minds, there's a chance the girl is going to come running out the front doors, jump in our Porsche, and strip down naked.
In other words, we all live in a fantasy world, and for some reason tipping huge to a cute girl makes us feel like some kind of player.

I always tip my barber everytime i get my hair cut. While he always does a great job i do it for the fact that i don't have to get mine cut somewhere else and risk having someone giving me a bad cut.

Years ago i had a good friend who always did that while out drinking. It did have an effect as we always got free shooters and the odd beer. He did manage to get a date with one of the gals he heavily tipped often.

Until the bartender catches her in the backseat of her car shagging the event promoter.
(banging on glass)..."HEY! YOUR TABLES AREN'T GOING TO SERVE THEMSELVES!" (walks back into the bar).
But thats another story for another time.

I guess it makes sense to tip big if you are a regular and you actually know the staff, but guys tip big even if they know they are never going to see the woman again.
I don't know, it just seems like such a schlocky gesture, and no woman would actually fall for it. Some of them do, I guess. I'm pretty sure 99% of the time they aren't thinking "that guy tips big, he's hot" they are thinking "hey great, money" and the guy is instantly forgotten.

If you tip well, are polite, and actually make eye contact when she comes by instead of staring at her breasts, you will not only get the occasional free drink or "appie" (as I understand fotze prefers to say it) but better service and yes, the occasional date.
That being said, I tip the same whether it is a guy or a girl, usually 15% for normal service and up to 25% for great service. Crap service is 10%, just to cover the obligatory sharing with the kitchen staff.

Exactly! Treat em with respect and kindness as opposed to being some sex object or eye candy. People around us in those bars used to bitch about us getting our drinks faster.

Ok here's another tipping Q, though it revolves more around buddies. I'm going to school up in Edmonton, so naturally I've made alot of friends with people who are Oilers fans. With one of em, last year we started an annual bet that whatever team ends up with the better record at the end of the year, the other guy has to take you out for a steak dinner(so basically I'm gettin a free steak dinner every April ).
Anyways, so at the end of last year, after a close call down the stretch, I won the bet and we went out to the Keg, courtesy of my buddy. The bill came to $81, and he left $85. I was totally embarassed, as our waitress was decent I thought. Nothing amazing, but not worthy of a $4 tip. All I had was Interac, I had no cash on me because I knew he was paying, so there was nothing I could do. After she came and collected it, all I wanted to do was get out of there, but we ended up staying for another 20 mins while he rambled on about why the Oilers will be better than Calgary next year, all the while with me avoiding eye contact with our now annoyed-looking former waitress every time she walked by.
So my question is this: If a friend/family member/significant other/co-worker, etc.. treats you to a meal and they tip terribly, is it rude of you towards the person treating you to pull out some coin and add to their tip? As by doing so, you're basically announcing to them that you think they're a cheap-ass tipper.

My MIL does not tip for anything. She gets her hair done 2X/week and does not tip, nor the Pizza delivery guy every Friday night.
We went out for the granny's birthday once, about 10 of us, and she paid the tab. Away from the table, I indiscreetly asked the waitress if there was any tip. She said no, don't worry about it, it's OK etc., so I gave her a cash tip of about 15%. I get embarrassed about that stuff also.

Anyone who complains about the method of tipping probably does not deserve a good tip.
I always round off the bill to an even dollar, paying cash, or paying by credit card or debit card. I do however, always round up, not down, when determining the tip, provided of course that I got good service. And that is always what the tip is based on, the service I received.

One place I usually tipped poorly because the quality of everything was terrible is Shanks. I has finally gotten so bad that I don't go any more but it sucks because it is the perfect place to go when you have a grp of like 20 people. Oh well, the straw that broke the camels back for me was when a server actually told me to eff off. She wasn't even our server. Oh well, I will post that story in a more applicable thread.
I have actually left an amount less that what the bill is there as well because there was stuff on our bill that we didn't order and our server was nowhere to be found.
On the plus side of service, I went to River Cafe with the Fiancee last night and it was AMAZING. The service was outstanding, the food fabulous, the wine thirst quenching and the ambiance perfect.
