A new beginning
Hello.
My name is Resolute. Pleased to meet you.
As one might quickly surmise, I am not a new poster here. In a past life, I was Snakeeye, and I would like to first thank the mods for permitting me to change my nickname. The reasons behind the change are as significant as they are simple.
I've followed with great interest recent threads posted by others as they struggle through significant challenges, specifically Ricosauve as he begins his battle against depression. The fascinating thing about these threads is how many other people respond stating they are battling, or have overcome, similar issues. It really helps one appreciate that they are never truly alone.
As I have hinted at in some of these threads, I am just now starting to face my own demons. My battle with depression goes back 15 years - to junior high school - while my problems are rooted in early childhood. I had been nearing another breaking point recently when the breakup of my friend's marriage proved to be a major turning point in my life. In her estranged husband, I saw very clearly how easily one's childhood demons can destroy them if they are allowed control. As a result of this, and conversations my friend and I had, I finally admitted I had a problem, and sought professional help. That was nearly three months ago.
The interesting thing about forums like this is that we only see aspects of eachother. We become caricatures of the people we truely are. My old nickname was just that. It represented an aspect of the person I was. The name was born in the darkest time of my life, when my depression reached the point where I would often put a knife to my wrists trying to decide if that was the night I ended it all. The nickname represented how out of control I felt, and how my entire life was subject to the whims of fate, and random chance.
As I move forward, I find that the name is the visual part of a past I am working to put behind me.
Likewise, my new name also represents an aspect of me. Unbreaking, unyielding, unmoving. My demons have controlled me for far too long, but no longer. I will fight them as fiercly as they have fought me, and I will not stop until I have won this war. Snakeeye was a representation of my past, Resolute, my future.
The name comes from a character in Michael Stackpole's DragonCrown Saga series, and has similar meanings. In the books, an elf takes up the name Resolute as a symbolic gesture of his determination to redeem his homeland, which had been overrun by an invading army. It was a concept I liked when I first read the books, without understanding why, at the time.
14 is, of course, an homage to Theo Fleury. A man who has battled numerous demons in his lifetime, overcoming them each time to become a star NHL player, and today, a successful businessman.
And so, with this, I begin a brand new day, and continue the first few steps towards a brand new me. However long it takes, I will achieve my goals.
~Resolute

Good for you Resolute. I think we have to find our own way's to be happy and I hope you find it. I get anxiety quite often when dealing with people and at it sometimes leads to depression. Just don't ever give up and try surrounding yourself with things that make you happy, pursue your dreams so-to-speak.
Good luck!

Good on ya Resolute, and good luck with your new beginning. The only thing that your missing is a cool movie theme moment.
Might I suggest something by a polka band.

Good luck. Just to clarify though, you still hate the Canucks and Oilers right?

But of course. Who can find happiness and positives when they are always so blue? Those teams are far too depressing for me.
