Jets sign backup goaltender Al Montoya
Didnt see this anywhere, so it may have been lost in the shuffle.
Quote:
The Winnipeg Jets have signed backup goaltender Al Montoya to a one-year deal worth $601,000.
The 27-year-old spent last season with the New York Islanders, posting a 9-11-5 record, with a 3.10 goals against average and a .893 save percentage.

More than likely a Calgary situation here with Pavelec handling about as many games as Kipper does. Winnipeg needs to get Kane signed! This summer has been a bit dismal as I can't stand Ponikarovsky and Jokinen at 4.5M is a bit yucky as well. WE NEED TOEWS TO COME HOME SOON!

Relax, Jets boy. You'll get your desert after you finish your supper.

He lit it up his first NHL season as a backup but crashed and burned under greater responsibility. Here's to Schneider following in the same path.

No rush really! I just don't understand the movement with free agents. Ponikarovski is just a mirror to Antropov. Big, slow and shows up about 1 in every 4 or 5 nights. I wonder if they can find a Sergei Bautin somewhere out there!

Solid backup. From the Islanders games I watched, he appeared to handle himself well given the circumstances.

Nobody wants to play in Winnipeg so they take what they can get.

So the jets win the 2012 free agent goalie frenzy?

What? No mention of trading Bouwmeester? It seems like everytime somebody get signed, someone will mention Trade Bouwmeester crap.
As for Al Montoya... this guy was supposed to be the saviour when he got drafted. After that he's been traded 3 times already? Good luck on him in Winnipeg.

It stuns me that the isles let him go - they have got some kind of goalie development program.....

Yet another example of dangers of drafting a goalie in the first round, especially that high.
Having said that, I actually like the signing by the Jets. He posted some outstanding stats the season before last (2010-11) in a brief chapter of his career thus far.
