I'm not sure. Perhaps he didn't want to waive before. Perhaps having more than 1 year left on his deal earlier was an impediment.
Pretty sure he'd waive now. It's a contract year and he might not even get powerplay time here ahead of Nakladal and Hamilton. He's not gonna want to play 3rd pairing in his contract year when he could waive and play top 4 elsewhere. And he may want to get away from the Canadian media to put the linesman incident behind him.

Those were your words not mine. Hot commodity is probably a slight exaggeration. But there's going to be teams interested and he has trade value.
