Thumbs up Who are the best defensive defensmen in the NHL?

We in Calgary are spoiled to have Robyn Regehr playing for us every night. But I was wondering, who else are the NHL's top shut down defensemen?

Plus/Minus is one way to measure the success of the player in question, but many people say this does not tell the whole story. So how do you measure who the best shutdown defensemen are?

Willie Mitchell has to be up there. He is on pace to break Every single record he had before. Hits, points, goals, assists, and is +23 at the moment.

Honestly I don't know to many out there but Robyn + Mitchell are both Shut down specialists.

Other then the obvious people (Chara, Pronger etc).

I find Lidstrom a pleasure to watch. He has great positioning and amazing puck control.

Well, aside from the usual suspects (Lidstrom, Pronger, Niedermayer, Regehr, Chara), you have to include Duncan Keith. I can't honestly think of anyone else right now - judging strictly by Sunday, I think Bogosian will be a good one.

Joakim hasn't been bad, but his +/- isn't great.

lidstrom I don't think goes into the Defensive Defense man category, He is more of a puck moving type.

The scary thing about Lidstrom is that He never loses a Battle in the corners, Its quite scary to be honest.

I don't know if I'd agree with that. Yes, he's got a great-first pass and is an elite puck mover.. but the guy can play defense with the best of them. He's not a typical shutdown dman who relies upon size/strength like Regehr, Chara and Mitchell.... Lidstrom uses his poisitioning and reads the game better than any dman I've ever seen. He's a different breed of a defensive dman in that sense.

Granted I haven't seen much of him this year... all those observations are from the past.

There are lots of guys that are really good that don't get credit.

Guys like Nick Shultz in Minnesota are hard to notice.
Paul Martin in Jersey.
Jan Hedja in Columbus.
To name a few.

It's pretty much impossible to say which of these type of guys is the best with certainty because their games are based on consistency, and you need to watch them basically all season to see how mistake free they are.

Generally they tend to gain cache based on size and popularity of their market, as well as any extended playoff runs they may be a part of.

Mentioned more often but still never seem to be in with the big names are guys like Timonen, Bouwmeester, and Vlasic although none of those guys are "pure" shutdown players.

I would not say Neidermayer is a great defensive d-man. He can't handle power forwards. He is allowed to clutch and grab with full immunity though.

ya his +124 since the lock out is brutal! In 17 seasons he has never had a minus season.

If Luongo played defense he would be the best, no doubt

Agreed, Lidstrom is either the best or one of the best all-round defensemen to play. He doesn't need the ability to lay the hits like Regehr because his positioning is always better than the other player.

We'll see on Thursday, just how good Lidstrom really is.

is the OP asking who is the best defenceman at playing defence or the best defensively oriented defenceman? Chara, Lidstrom, Niedermayer are not defensive defencemen, in the sense that they only play defence (ala Regehr), but they are defencemen that are very sound defensively, as well as offensively.
under this sort of definition, duncan keith isnt a 'defensive-defenceman' either, as he is a good allround guy who is quick and very positionally sound.
If we are looking at comparables style-wise to regehr, we are talking willie mitchell, nick schultz, mike komisarek, jason smith type of players...and of this group, regehr is the leader
it becomes hard to compare regehr to guys like lidstrom and co as he doesnt have that same rounded game they do.

I could be out to lunch, but I think Rifle was trying to focus on the unheralded fellas:

Regehr
Komisarek
Ohlund (i think this guy is very underrated)
Mitchell
Ballard
Orpik
