I agree. If your spot isn't guaranteed, make it appealing for them to keep you. Salary implications and contract structure are a big part of if you get to stay and play. And don't be afraid to get playing time on the farm if needed - play the long game.

Really surprised this isn’t done yet. Might be as simple as a 1 way vs 2 way though. Hopefully they get him signed prior to training camp so he doesn’t lose anytime.

Not sure what the right deal is at this point, but I liked a lot of what I saw from him last season.

The Flames will need him this season, so I hope they don't screw around too much with the negotiation.

I'd like to see a 3 year deal at 1 mil. Last 2 years being a 1 way.

But it'll be 1 year at league minimum

I think so too. He's a player I'd give a 2nd year to. I have a feeling the Flames are offering him a 1 year $750k (or barely over) show me contract. I think its a mistake.

The Flames have a 2-3 year window to make something happen. Part of making something happen is having players on value contracts before they fully hit their potential.

I am wondering if the sticky point is how much his AHL salary is. If they can send him to the minors and not retain any money on the salary cap that surely makes him easier to bring up and down. But he probably wants a significant increase in his AHL salary because if he gets sent down he will want to make some cash.

The Flames are not willing to give him 1 way yet. That’s why he is not signed

He has no leverage except going to Europe so sooner than later he will come to his senses and sign.

I believe they did the same to Kylington a couple years ago

Well that would be silly line to draw in the sand considering they went out and gave tweeners in Gilbert and Meloche one way deals. That's not showing a ton of faith in a player who's developed at a solid rate and got games in last year - who also happens to be eligible for waivers.

That's the difference between RFA and UFA. Gilbert and Meloche could have signed with any team. Ruzicka can only sign with the Flames unless someone chooses to give him an offer sheet.

If you think that's silly, the whole business of putting together a hockey team must frustrate you intensely.

He's an NHL player and should have a spot on this club on a 1-way deal imo. There's no harm in him subbing in and out with players like Lucic, Rooney and Lewis on a regular basis. His upside is enough that he can at least move up the lineup in a pinch.

I really can't see him gaining a whole lot from any extended time in the AHL now, whereas a full season practicing and playing with the big club and a coach like Sutter will go a long way.

With our centre depth now, I wonder if we see him on the wing this year. Sutter previously stated there was no point playing him on the fourth line. I hope this guy can bring more consistency—and second and third effort—this season. When he's effective, he's a good player.

I think this guy could be a quality 3rd liner in the NHL. Probably not for the Flames as it seems like Darryl just isn’t big enough of a fan.

Ruzicka should be in the line-up imo, he has a lot of skill to his game, I think he could contribute offensively on the 3rd or 4th line as a center that has been missing from this team.

Just watch his goals this year, the patience and skill he shows with the puck is miles above our other 4th line centers whose ideology is to get rid of the puck as soon as possible. He's got an amazing shot and good hands and he has the size to get space in front of the net

For example take a look at his goals from last season (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cp-V...=RingOfFireCGY). His 2nd goal (and 5th but less impressive) is not an easy one to make, a lot of people struggle with one timer on your natural wing side (leftie on a left wing) even at NHL level and he put a good amount of force into that shot, basically shows me that he is a threat to score on either wing and not a lot of players on the flames can make this shot, very underrated goal. His 3rd goal is even more impressive to me, he shows amazing patience with the puck up close and changes the angle that lets him score, most rookies and 4th line players would try to shoot the puck as soon as possible but he shows confidence in his skills and it pays off. His 4th goal shows his ability to create separation by utilizing his size + reach and skating. I also remember he had some great assists too but I do not wanna go digging for them.

Overall I think his goals shows such diversity in how he scores that it makes me excited for him to get a good opportunity and play with more skilled player

He started to float after a good start. Looks more like Jankowski at the end. Something happened and he didn’t even produce at the AHL level

Some Ruzicka quotes from podcast with ex NHLer Marian Gaborik - I just finished listening :
No sex before the game, but if it would have to be something special, why not :-)
Now has 99kg - practiced hard all summer.
Dont want another Canadian girlfriend, had one, and it was a waste of his 3 years of life.
Flames are still searching for another winger, so tough situation for him.
He expects his contract to be done next week.
Darryl really tough on players. Darryl unpredictable. Smiled after one loss, another day mad after big win. Everybody on their toes during games and practices.
Gaborik saying it was tough to play under Darryl in LA. Won 1 Stanley Cup with him though....did not go into any details.
Lucic best teammate for him. Spent Christmas with his family. Took him under his wings.
Flames players doing team bonding gatherings all season long. Good locker room.
As for 13 - confirmed it was all about family for him, expecting baby etc. Well known stuff like that.
Tkachuk insisted on capitancy. Sounds like it was really the main reason why he left /did not want to sign long term/ - really interesting stuff.
Liked him as a teammate. "Great guy" per his words.
No dickhead in Flames locker room. Veteran players always say something when something is wrong. But everybody was good to him and Vladar /2 youngest Flames/
Best moments during the season were the times when he played regularly /team winning in those games/, after that Trade deadline came and it was the end for him.
Play-off series with Edmonton really tough and hard /said it was good to have guys like Looch, Gudbranson and Zadorov in the fold/.
Was almost impossible to stop McJesus and that German guy /he reffered them as McDavid and Draisaitl :-)/
His times in Stockton - town full of crime, shooting all over the place, no restaurants there.
He is nervous about his new contract /he is qualified RFA/ - Flames have to make a decision if he stays with the team, otherwise he has to go through waivers and anybody can take him.
Gaborik said Ruzicka should say hi to Darryl for him in the end of the interview :-)

Greetings from Czech Republic!!! Go Flames!!!

I don’t want the flames to add another bottom 6 player because it will pretty much take out ruzicicka out of lineup. Don’t get me wrong if flames add a bonafide top 6 winger and he gets bumped out thats another story. Flames obviously going for the cup this year .
