Default Jersey Poll - All Time #20

Did this five years ago, thought it might be interesting again. Always fun to see younger fans and older fans arguing over different generations in a battle.

Will put one up a day whenever possible.

Have fun! and Go old guys!

How it works:

I pick off a key group of players for each jersey. I don't use every name, as that gets tedious and unnecessary (probably go with say 5 unless there are many that wore the same number).

I also don't put up a guy for the number he isn't known for (Iginla shouldn't win #24 for example)

Results:
1 - Roman Turek 67.8% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=138746)

Went looking for Suter videos just because he hardly ever gets the attention he deserves. Couldn't find anything dedicated strictly to him as a Flame, but did find this beauty...

So. Many. Memories.

I'm guessing Glencross will get a bunch of votes then get nothing for a while, then get a couple more then get injured and not be able to finish the poll.

Suter wins, but he was before my time as a Flames fan, and I've honestly never been a huge Glencross fan, so I went with Huselius

I hate Gary Suter for ruining Paul Kariya's career with one of the dirtiest crosschecks I have ever seen but you have to vote for him here.

If you watch the 86' Oiler series game 7 video that was posted here a while ago, it's evident how good of a skater Suter was. There were a bunch of hall-of-famers in that game, but Suter was one of the few players who wouldn't look out of place on the ice today. And because MacInnis had the legendary shot, people forget that Suter also had an excellent point shot. Hard, accurate. The pair of them on a powerplay was an absolute nightmare for goalies.

Suter had huge skills but didn't bother to play much defence when with the Flames which is kind of needed for a defenceman. I remember one time King put him out paired with Pettit. I thought this should be interesting and sure enough the other team got a 3 on 0 breakaway. I voted Glencross.

845 points in 1145 career NHL games not including playoffs, the bulk of which was done with the Flames including a Stanley Cup. Also won the Calder. Not picking a player of Suter's calibre is ridiculous.

Suter had his faults, but as Cali Flames Fan mentions, his career is much, much better than any other #20 for the Flames.

Since the thread wasn't titled "Which #20 should win the Lady Byng" I went with the obvious choice.

A #20 Suter jersey was my very first Flames jersey...stitched on letters and numbers...in 1986...rare for that time

Gary Suter is one of my all time favorites. I've said it before here, but he never gets the credit that he deserves. He's also sort of forgotten on the '89 squad because he got hurt the first round against Vancouver. Between 85-86 to 92-93 (He was hurt most of 93-94) he ranks 7th in Point Shares among Defencemen.

For his entire career (85-86 to 01-02) he ranks 9th (not too shabby at all): http://www.hockey-reference.com/play...l=&order_by=ps

One of the better groups so far.

Went with Suter, but I miss the pure skill of Kristian Huselius. That was a fun time as a fan. Glencross is no slouch either.

He was no worse defensively than MacInnis was for much of his early tenure with the Flames. MacInnis's idea of defence was to swing his stick at a forward as he skated around him. At least Suter could skate himself back into position. And remember, Suter played his best years on a pairing with Brad McCrimmon, so he had the green light while McCrimmon minded the store.

MacInnis made an effort to learn the trade and became pretty good at it. While Suter was here he didn't.

Saying he had to be paired with one of the best defensive defencemen the Flames ever had to be effective, doesn't say much for your argument that he was elite.
