Hovering around the .500 mark, the Calgary Flames face an uphill climb to the playoffs

If you throw out that first 10 games, the Flames are a team that captures points at a .556 clip – a 91.2 point pace. The Athletic projects the playoff cutline in the Western Conference at around 89-90 points. The team currently occupying the final wild card spot in the West, the St. Louis Blues, have a .556 points percentage. If you throw out the first 10 games, the Flames are a team that should be very much in the playoff mix, and it’s that standard of play that feeds optimism about the current edition.

5 Things - Flames vs. Jets

2. Know Your Enemy
We’re still about eight weeks from the spring dance, but with the fireworks we saw Saturday?

Consider this the opening bell.

In a battle between two of the NHL’s top teams, the Jets – led by their cornerstone pivot, Mark Scheifele – knocked off the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 on Saturday at Rogers Arena.

Scheifele had a goal and three helpers to lead the way, while fellow top-liners Gabe Vilardi (2G, 1A) and Kyle Connor (2A) were equally clutch, and former Flame Sean Monahan nabbed his first as a Jet in the victory.

A playoff-style one, at that.

I just needed to point out that star players are mostly about reputation.

Scheifele is generally regarded as a clear cut #1 franchise center, but Kadri's points are comparable, and I would argue that Kadri is better defensively. The +/- doesn't bear that out, but Scheifele isn't playing most of the season with 2 rookies on his wings.

Kyle Connor is an elite sniper, but Blake Coleman has more goals on the third line for Calgary, as well as being an elite shutdown winger who kills penalties.

Just sayin', this is why it's important for our GM and the pro scouts to do their homework on any trade returns. It's how you can extract guys like Sharangovich and Kuzmenko from situations where they aren't valued.

Not to take away from your valid premise, but Connor has played 19 fewer games this season. Games played being equal he likely has 8-10 more goals than Coleman.

Bro there's a very, very large gulf between Coleman and Connor.

Does Hanifin sit now to protect the trade asset?

I agree. One is a Stanley cup winner and twice for that matter.

I doubt it. Have to think everybody is playing today including Markstrom.

Connor has one of the deadliest shots in the league....

I like Coleman as much as the next guy but you can't compare a two way grinder to a sniper.

Coleman's points are a product of his unwavering will and consistent efforts to out work the opposition. Connor is pure skill..

My post was more about the lack of respect our players get, not that the Jets players are bad.

Well I agree we want our scouts doing their homework on trade targets, that kind of goes without saying. But I’m not exactly sure how you got there.

Coleman is a very useful player having a career season. Connor has ability to score 40+ goals. Flames need more guys like the latter.

The Jets are the Flames of 2 years ago. Not good enough.

I believe Winnipeg was once again (and always will be?) voted the worst city in the NHL in the Athletic’s anonymous players poll.

Let’s send them back to their miserable home on a losing note.

Hoping for 2 straight losses with Winnipeg and Boston. The team needs it after the random 4 game winning streak to mess up their draft position.
