Default Friedman: Devils and Flames have had legit discussions about Markstrom

https://twitter.com/user/status/1756494352220663906

Friedman also mentioned he doesn't know if this was taken to Markstrom.

Said as of today it looks unlikely but could pick up later.

Well, that's gonna happen IMO. You get far enough down the road things snowball.

Sounds like a work in progress to me.

Makes the most sense for the Devils, they need to make a move soon.

I hope the Flames cash in and maximize the return.

Salary retention should not be an issue for the right package.

That's sounds like what's holding things back.

The fact that the Flames are still in 100% sell mode while on a winning streak and 1 point out of a playoff spot immediately makes Conroy one of the best GMs in franchise history IMO. In all my years of watching this team I don't think I've ever seen this level of forward thinking

Murray Edwards has allowed salary retention so few times that the Flames might be one of the teams to do it the least.

I just think's it's in his blood to really not have players bought out or being paid by him if they are not working for him. It's not that it has never happened but probably 25+owners allow that more then the Flames

Sure sounds like they are far apart on the keys of the deal being retention and the package.

Mercer would be ideal and I don’t think unrealistic if the Flames eat half. I am also interested in Holtz and Nemec (who I can’t see being in the deal in any way).

Watching the segment seems like the deal is going to be too complicated to come to fruition this season and I could see the Flames deciding to keep Marky if this streak continues (Hanifin and Tanev will still be dealt)

Flames have do e several buyouts. They gave Brouwer 15 of his $18M to get rid of him 2 years early. I am sure Edwards doesn’t love it but he is paying for 2 coaches, the team spends to the cap and we have never heard about financial resources being restricted.

I can see a Markstrom trade happening this summer, but I don't think it'll happen mid season.

Depends on if jersey gets motivated to make the trade. Take a breather, wait a couple weeks and see where you're at. If you feel pressure to make a move because it's a glaring need, you make the move work.

End of the day, it all rests on Markstrom though, he has to waive.

Mercer, Vukojevic, 1st RD 24, conditional 2 rd in 25

For Markstrom (25% retention), Tanev

Condition is if NJ make EC final this year or next, it becomes a 1st

It's jersey, if anyone knows anything about making offers other people cannot refuse, it's New Jersey.

Markstrom $2M retained for Nemec straight up.

If they want him for this season Conroy should demand an absolute ransom. Devils look like an at best bubble team right now, not good enough to compete at all with the top teams in the East and just a borderline playoff team. They have one more year of a cheap Luke Hughes and two more years of a cheap Nemec and after that they have to back up the brinks truck for both. They also have to sign Mercer this offseason and Holtz next offseason. In 24 months they will be shedding salary just to stay under the cap. Their window is the next 3 playoff rounds before they no longer get the ELC bang for their buck on a number of young assets.
