Another thought - likely crazy and unclear if another team can "dictate" this, but perhaps NJ asked for Markstrom to start? Make sure he maintains that starter role as it's going to take another day or two to get the deal finalized?

Doesn’t track for the Flames. Markstrom gets injured and there is no deal

Oh for sure it's a stretch, but perhaps some kinda gentleman's deal in place given he's signed for not just this year?
