Default Digital Video Camera - looking for recommendation

Mrs.Goon had a baby boy a couple of weeks back and my out-of-town parents are going to pony up for us to buy a digital video camera to send them short videos of Little Goon.

The last time I used a video camera regularly (1984), it had a separate VCR pack that went over my shoulder. I understand that things have improved a bit since then, and I'm hoping that some of you can recommend a decent mid-priced video camera.

Ease of use and video quality are the key selling points.

In terms of brand and bang-for-buck I'd say look at Canon's. They are some of the best point and shoot ones, IMO.

Have a look at SLRs that have video features. A good camera with video capacity has much more value than a dedicated video camera. We have a canon 5d mk II, and it produces nicer hd video than many video cams on the market. Also look at vimeo (YouTube for cam enthusiasts) to see examples of what different models can do.

I have used Flip HD camcorders. Great for ease of use and portability, but the video quality is lacking. I think if you are looking for something to record memories on, you want a stand alone HD camcorder.

The new goggles also do nothing.

Yeah I'd consider an SLR, the T2i can do 1080p.

Congrats on the new addition.

A DSLR is too bulky and long use video can burn out your sensor.
The new HD video cameras are light and have amazing clarity.

I have a DSLR that takes HD video and will be buying an actual HD video camera in the near future. There is no comparison for zooming, focus, sound and one handed operation.

I'd stick with a high end camera like the newer sony.
