I actually consider Lamb of God pretty tame. I still enjoy them, but not necessarily my cup of tea when it comes to metal.

Encyclopaedia Metallum considers them "Groove Metal/Metalcore". Which is pretty fair IMO.

Dude they are probably one of the best Black Metal bands along with Old Man's Child (from whom they got one of their guitarists), and their organ looks epic

Try some Demilich, Immolation, Suffocation, Deeds of Flesh, or Incantation for something brutal.

Children of Bodom is worse? What the hell, Bodom rules. But of course they aren't as brutal as other bands, but that doesn't make them bad. Alexi could play rings around any Death metal guitarist.

Blinded Colony
Insomnium

Children of Bodom is the band I first got into metal with, but after I found Kalmah I quickly got over CoB.

Lets see...

  • Amogh Symphony - Abolishing the Obsolete System
An interesting band from India. http://www.myspace.com/mohenjadaro
  • Amorphis - Their last three albums are pretty accessible
  • Kalisia - Cybion
  • Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor

  • Giant Squid - The Ichthyologist and Metridium Fields are both great

Arsis is a great melodic death band as well.

^ Can't go wrong with Noumena

Dark Tranquility is another good melodic death metal band, accessible IMO

A lot of Norther fans didn't seem to like this album, but here's melodic for ya

Bands I've been listening to lately:

Enslaved - http://www.myspace.com/enslaved
Sylosis - http://www.myspace.com/sylosis
Sybreed - http://www.myspace.com/sybreed
The Duskfall - http://www.myspace.com/theduskfa11
Before the Dawn - http://www.myspace.com/beforethedawnmusic
Another Life - http://www.myspace.com/anotherlifeofficial
Obscura - http://www.myspace.com/realmofobscura
Thanatos - http://www.myspace.com/thanatos666

Didn't classify any of it cause well...you can go a lot of ways with most of it. Just some stuff I would recommend that I haven't seen mentioned yet, though I could be wrong. Enjoy! Love this thread.
