Tbh I'd rather Smith give up 3 goals a game consistently than giving up 4 then 0 then 5 etc.

At least then it's manageable.

Whats funny is a lot of people said this last year about GG and people said that same thing overreacting etc be patient. Flames miss the playoffs, I think Treliving is going to pull the trigger quick if the team is below .500 around mid November.

We were questioning the goaltending after game 2, and Smith was lights out in his next start. As the team gets better we just need him to settle in — no need to push the panic button after game 4...

Chill.

When is it time to start worrying then?

More than 48 hours after the last shutout, at least.

If they're .500 or under in mid November because of leaky goaltending then you can worry.

That doesn't mean that every overreaction is a correct reaction. At least Smith has shown that he can be a good starting goaltender. Not sure what Gulutzan proved with his prior record.

If Smith isn't good for the next month, then yeah, maybe you make a move. But don't forget, we have some good young goalies in the system. Perhaps we just promote from within?

Yeah I wouldn't say us wanting a legit goalie is being impatient. We haven't had a real #1 since kipper. We have been a below average team since Kipper. It's the most important position and if we want to be contenders it needs to be addressed.

That might be too late to salvage the season though. What percentage of teams that are out of the playoffs at American Thanksgiving miss the playoffs again?

Smith played well against Nashville but it in no way made me stop thinking about our goalie situation. Bottom line we have a 70 year old goalie who hasn’t been consistent since his injury last year. We need another goalie

Dillon Dube reduced to 10ish minutes tonight and Frolik with another low minute game, 7:00 last game and 8:00 this game. Ryan increased to 14:00 minutes too.

Inconsistent goaltending at the start of a season is nothing to freak out about. Smith will improve, and I bet that Rittich pushes this year too.

The bad:

Monahan and Gaudreau - so rarely are they bad though. Blues are good at suffocating lines at times.
Andersson - I found his decision making slow, almost like he was second-guessing himself out there.

The good:

Bennett: That last goal wouldn't have happened without him, and that was a nice set-up in the first for Neal. Good game practically every shift.

Rittich: Not easy to come into a game and face some high-pressure shots like he did. Closed the door and gave the Flames a chance at a comeback.
Brodie: Rarely turned the puck over, and just got the puck out efficiently.

Yeah, we lost, but consider this:

Anyone here feel that the top pairing on Defence looks worse this year than last? Anybody feel that the 2nd pairing is worse than last? Hamonic is out, but Hanifin-Stone have been fine. Giordano and Brodie are once again downright elite.

Blues are a very good team that skate fast and have a lot of physical and talented forwards. Their only weakness is in net, and Allen just decided he was going to have himself a great game. He does that - Allen is a top-tier goalie regularly throughout every season, but it is his horrible inconsistency that makes him a relatively poor starter. Tonight he was on, and with the Blues doing a strong job on the top line, it was enough to sink the Flames.

Neal and Ryan scored - depth scoring came through tonight, so there's another plus in an otherwise losing effort.

It’s 4 games in, tons of teams goalies have looked porous to start the season especially with the pads size changes. I’d be way more concerned if our forwards where not looking like they were finding chemistry. We managed for several years to be in the mix with less firepower and worse net minding, I’m feeling way better about this team so far and more importantly I’m enjoying the games even in a loss.

Default Blues - 5 Flames - 3

Who’s San Jose’s 3rd string goalie? Will they take a 2nd for him? At this rate, I think I’d rather have Rittich and Gillies battling it out. Smith has looked horriawful for 3/4 games.
