My PC is over 10 years old, and besides a new video card a couple of years ago, it hasn't changed at all.
I am finally noticing some performance issues, and I have a few games on my Steam Library I can't actually run at an minimum level requirement.
I'm not a heavy gamer anymore, not planning to use my PC for VR or running multiple monitors. However I would like to run games like GTA 5, Skyrim Special edition, and Deus Ex Mankind Divided (Big fan of the series, can't play it) at least at an average level of performance.
At this point I'm not sure if I should pick up some new components or I should just get a new machine all together. Some of the video cards you guys were reviewing surprised me how much they are, so cost is definitively something I'm hoping to keep down too.

Current specs:
  • Corsair TX750W 750W ATX 12V 60A 24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 120MM Fan
  • Western Digital Caviar SE16 640GB SATA2 7200RPM 16MB Hard Drive OEM 3YR MFR Warranty
  • Corsair XMS3 TR3X6G1333C9 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1333 CL 9-9-9-24 I7 Triple Channel Memory Kit
  • Intel Core I7 920 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.66GHZ Bloomfield 8MB LGA1366 4.8GT/S
  • AMD Radeon R7 200 Series
  • ASUS P6T X58 ATX LGA1366 DDR3 LGA1366 3PCI-E16 PCI-E1 2PCI CrossFire SLI SATA2 GBLAN Motherboard

I'm thinking at a minimum, I'll need more RAM and a better video card though, I'm not sure if I also need to upgrade processor and motherboard to support those things.
I think it might be cheaper to get the parts myself and get someone to put it together for me than to get a complete system from a store?

Anyways, I'm looking for CP's advice

That's hilarious, we have almost identical old rigs.
I sought advice on this as well and Psycnet recommended to upgrade my GPU to what was $280 Geforce GTX and load a fresh Windows onto an SSD.
This was a couple of years ago but the old rig is still kicking it. Granted I don't really play too much anymore. I come to this thread for vicarious experience lol.

EDIT: So basically what DownInFlames has already recommended

DownInFlames has been great, he designed a build for me

Definitely a great start to what I should look into

9900k confirmed as 95w TDP, that's exciting. Very likely the chips will overclock to 5 ghz across all cores very easily.

The 8700k's I had to delid hit 5.1 to 5.3 easily, and with delidding not needed thanks to going back to solder I'm quite happy.

Yeah seems like a good processor, though it's kind of annoying that they're removing the hyperthreading on the i7's

Yep, makes zero sense to do that. For every positive step forward, Intel is hell bent on taking a step back as well.

That being said the Asus Formula XI board looks pretty nice, It's my Motherboard of choice since my 990X days, and with the boost clock of 5ghz confirmed on the 9900k, I have hopes of at least 5.3 ghz on an average Overclock.

2070 reviews are out.

I might just stick with my 980 and my 1920x1200 monitor for another iteration.

*sings a song of lament for 16:10 ratio monitors*

I think I'd like to try gaming with a headset/mic combo. Would be handy with the game I'm currently playing.

Recommendations for a decent entry level set? Like to keep it around $100 just to see if I like it.

I've always like Sennheiser, they have a value headset now. Reviews seem to be good.

Could also go with an in-ear option.. I've really liked these:

Come with a mic and clip. Very comfortable once I bought some comply foam tips for them:

(Believe the tx 200 fit the headphones and is what I have, in medium)

It's not top of the line but decent price on a 1TB WD M.2 SSD.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

On another note, is it worthwhile trying to sell my old SSD or should I just stash it?

Going to have a PC sent to me by a friend who built it. Any suggestions beyond packing the GPU and air cooler separately? No other moving parts that I can think of.

I've been mulling over a PC build for a while and am contemplating the various WD color drives. My build has had a 2 TB WD Black selected for a while, but I can get a 4 TB WD Red for about the same price. I know Reds are optimized for NAS use, but it seems like they're OK to use in a desktop as well. Any downsides to using a Red that I'm missing? Twice the storage for the same price is tempting.

Red drives are slower, 5400rpm compared to to blacks at 7200rpm. They also have less cache than black drives of the same size, although the 2TB black and 4 TB red both have 64MB.

If you don’t need the faster transfer speeds it will be fine.

I mean it would mostly be for media serving, and I think my bottleneck for that will be transcoding and my CPU. I'm thinking it might be OK to go with 4 TB...thanks for the info.

I am in need of some help. I have my computer set up for home theatre however I just noticed my video card which is Radeon HD 7800 can’t handle more than 3 720p streams at once. Now this card is older so not surprised. There are so many video cards out there I have no idea what I need. I don’t really want to spend a ton on a card but it would be a nice to have. Only features I need:

Be able to run 3 screens (projector 1080 2x720 monitors)
Be able to handle 6 hd streams at once.
Not sure if it matters all streaming is done via chrome.
Needs to run cs:go if I ever decide to play it after I bought it. No other games are played

Are you sure that's a card limitation? Unless you are using hardware rendering/decoding specifically, usually it's a CPU limitation.

Have you tried disabling/enabling Hardware Acceleration in Chrome's settings?
