Why on earth would two of the worst teams in the NHL, in a very strong draft year, trade their unprotected first round picks?

I chalk it up to reflex. Lots of folks don't want to waste another six years trying to build a championship team around wingers, because, to be fair, nobody wins championships from the wings.

I don't know, my sense is when I look at this board and some others that some fans are more of a fan of trades and drafts and rebuilding, then the actual game on the ice?

This team is still relatively young, and we should be looking at how to make it more competitive or fixing flaws, then thinking about blowing it up 30 games into a season after a 50 win season.

I've seen some people win championships from wings.

There’s lots of bad GMs. There’s been endless foolish trades made in nhl history.

Gaudreau has massive trade value. If Treliving decides to move him he can move him for a great return and it doesn’t have to be a rebuilding move.
Perhaps I'm a little skeptical, but The two examples you point out aoccured 14 & 18 years ago....hockey departments are way more sophisticated than they were even 5 years ago. I guess Treliving might be able to find a renegade GM hell bent on destroying his career (don't think Milbury or O'Connell have held GM subsequent GM positions) but it would be wishful thinking.

When one says 'big skilled two way center' I think Alex Barkov. What's being described there is an elite C. Who is going to trade an asset of the caliber for an undersized one dimensional winger with questions on his effectiveness come playoff time? You're not going to get a Barkov type, maybe a Trochek.

These mock trades are getting ridiculous. Sure Gaudreau isn't playing great so far this year, but since arriving in Calgary he's been one of the best Flames ever as far as point production. Like Kane in Chicago, you build around him not ship him out because he's had a couple slow months. Wake up people!

Pageau seems to fit Calgary's needs, leadership, top 6, shoots right.

I was hearing Pageau was closing in on an extension in Ottawa, but that appears to have stalled out at this point and now I am hearing four teams with interest..Calgary, Colorado, Chicago, and Columbus...

You gotta strike while the iron is hot Tre!

I think you could argue Chicago and Washington won cups while their best players were wingers, although they also had strong centre depth.

Kane and Ovechkin each have Conn Smythes too.

The Blues got ROR for a song last year. And Kane to SJ was a great deal too. Not a C but a player the Flames could really use.

There are deals out there.

But all championship teams have great wingers. Why start from scratch? Gaudreau isn't returning an elite center in a trade and it's not like he's a UFA this summer.

Trading Gaudreau just means we are missing another piece of the puzzle.

Pageau is:

1) going to command an absurd trade price because his value is at its highest ever
2) not a very good play-driver by most metrics
3) not likely to re-sign at a rate that Calgary will be able to afford
4) shooting at a ridiculous clip right now that is not sustainable

I would shy away, to be honest. Namestnikov is a far more appealing target. He's physical, a good scorer, can kill penalties, and play all three positions.

Definitely cause for concern on the Pageau side of things. Some of those numbers are almost the definition of unsustainable - but at the same time he is getting buried in zone starts and producing at a pretty impressive clip.

For sure someone who shouldn't get overpaid/we shouldn't overpay for in terms of acquisition cost.

I'm pretty sure in both cases the players wanted out. It's one thing for a GM to have their hands tied and another for him to move these players out of his own will. ROR was also owed a big bonus which shouldn't be ignored.

I don't see any 'off the radar' candidates out there. Certainly not during the course of the season.

And what cap is going out to fit in the $9.1M of cap you have coming in.

Jankowski - $1.6M

and what else?
