Goalies are voodoo but I do think full-right goalies represent a market inefficiency - all things equal, importantly - with the way shooters are shooting these days...so there's that. Great pick!
Wonder why they didn't pursue a trade down tactic as they did yesterday.

There is decent theory on drafting overage players in the latter half of the draft. You have a bigger sample size and an extra year to see how they are developing before spending an asset on them.
Being an overaged goalie might explain why he was unranked.

Pretty sure Mangiapane was an over-ager.
I think Frederik Andersen was somehow drafted as a 22 year old. He was in the NHL the next year.

Overage for euro goalies isn’t a big deal. They develop late and this might be the year he pops based on a super small sample size to start the season

Savoie and Chromiak still on the board.
Happy to have Chechelev and hopefully I’m still happy in 5 years.

Some of you are far too concerned about rankings by people who can't get an NHL job

Another think about drafting a player from Russia is the lack of a transfer agreement, even if he doesn't appear NHL ready until he's 27, he'd still be our property.

Not many players can say they were drafted twice, both after the age of 20.
Although Craig Anderson was drafted twice as well.

To be fair, I think managers would be smart to give a lot of these guys NHL jobs. But getting a job in the NHL is often more about who you know, or having played in the league before.

Going to go out on a limb but this kid is going to be the best goalie in the history of the game. I have nothing to back that up.

I am huge on Parsons and Wolf, but it is smart to keep a pipeline going. Flames must have really liked him to draft him here, so I won't argue. It gives every prospect in the system a place to play and develop with time, which is great. Flames should really be drafting a few more goalies from Russia in the next few drafts, as owning their rights for so long while not having to worry about making room for them in the AHL gives a much longer runway.
For instance, I am not huge on Gillies (and never really was), but I wouldn't say that there is no way he ends up developing into a decent NHL goalie. There simply isn't any room to give him that runway organizationally. Occasionally drafting some Russian goalies gives everyone a bit more runway in a way, so I really like this pick. Parsons and Wolf will both get a bit more time to develop over the years.

Medvedev ate all of the other Russian goalie prospects that the Flames have been interested in since.

Seems like the general approach is to add a goalie bullet to the chamber every year - using a mid to late pick.
I don't mind the overager thing. Goalies are highly unpredictable so another year of performance to evaluate makes sense.

Tying a couple tangents going on together in this thread, TSN’s current so called director of scouting drafted Medvdev for us in the 2nd round 19 years ago.

Right hand catch like Askarov, I dont mind the over age thing as it pertains to a goalie. Russia seems to be producing some good goalie bloodlines and like other's have said, we have control longer so that is a benefit since goalies seem to develop or not, at different rates. Creates development flexibility.

Between the retro jerseys, mask, lankiness and style, he looks like the reincarnation of Tretiak!
