I have in the past gotten glass coverage simply because a new windshield was like 2k and I was replacing it about once every two years. Deductible was 250 and the coverage annually was less, so it was kind of a no brainer.

If you know what your windshield costs to replace and it's not too expensive then the dollars might not work out but if it's heated and rain sensing and on any luxury brand car (including the Japanese ones) it's probably not going to be cheap.

Must be different coverages in Canada, since windshields are covered under Comprehensive coverage here. Only $100 deductible too, and most glass places will pay some of that on top. I've done a few comp claims and rates have never increased because of it because you're considered not at fault.

Definately shop around. Have a Subaru outback with eyesight, and Subaru quoted me $2300 to replace the windshield "because the glass needs to meet a certain spec, and the eyesight needs calibrating"

Crystal Glass quoted me $1050 with factory glass, and $499 with aftermarket glass, both +tax + 139 for calibration

Glass Masters quoted 454.95 all in with aftermarket glass and calibration

Went to Glass Masters and did not have any problems, everything works the same as it did before.

I found the same thing, except Glass Masters here rejected to do it because I wouldn't recalibrate. I went to another company (PM if anyone wants to know) and they allowed me to sign a waiver and not recalibrate. Was $260 installed, calibration was an optional $100. I didn't get it done because cracks were passing in front of the cameras and it was still working fine. There's no change with the new windshield, everything works fine.

Honestly, these types of stories just make me hate car repairs even more. I feel like it's such an underhanded industry with so many shops looking to rip you off and make you feel like an idiot for questioning what they are doing. Why is it this way with car repairs, but I don't really get this feeling for anything else?

I think your headlight fluid needs re-filling. I can do that for you for $800.

Alright the headlight fluid was one thing but this is starting to sound like code for something else.

Don't trust anyone that doesn't tell you that a headlight rebalancing is included in that cost. I'll do the refill and rebalance for $800.00 and your kids will get free hotdogs and balloons.

Buy glass coverage through AMI. Covers all glass, $50 ded. About $220ish/yr for your average car.

Reminds me of the idiots who call the tech guy to fix the computer or TV which isn’t plugged in.

The problem with car repairs :

The blue book says your car is worth this much.
The green book says that it should take this long to repair.
The red book says the parts will cost this much.
The paisley book says that the suit your wearing adds this much.
The yellow book says that we're going to have to order that in.
The eggshell book says that this part is only available from the car manufacturer.
The purple book says that you will have to leave the car with us.
The brown book says that scratch was already there.
The orange book says hook it up to this special diagnostic computer.
The white book says your next scheduled checkup is Tuesday.

The {enter 12 minute job here} is in your car, sir. That will be $846.92. We close at five, you can pick it up tomorrow.

Trust is always the first thing to die.

(I should add that I found an honest mechanic, and I travel 45 minutes to get work done there. I also hoard any comments I hear about good mechanics in the area like they are gold.)
