Rosters are expanded this year to 22 skaters, 3 goalies
Might open a spot for a player like Chechelev

26 forwards invited 19 1st round picks and 2 undrafted
Zary and Pelltier are pretty much in the middle of the pack based on their #24 and #26 draft picks.

Is Zavgorodniy still eligible to play for Russia?

Okay that's an interesting development... it would be a treat to see a real U20 best on best this year.
We want Lafreniere!

It depends on training camp dates...which will be weeks before the start of the season

Great for Canada to add Dach, bad for Zary's chance of making the roster. Also is poor indication for start of NHL season which I have been avoiding thinking about.

Reminds me of Crosby playing when he surely would have been on the Pens roster and Bergeron on the same team after he'd already played a rookie season.

Hopefully Pelletier and/or Zary can make it as 4th line energy guys.
Wolf will be backing up Knight again.

Even if the league starts on Jan 5th, the most a player might miss is one game if they go to the WJC.
I bet they all go, because playing games in a condensed tournament is better preparation for the season than being at a training camp

But wouldn’t that mean skipping training camps and pre-season, or are they hoping NHL preseason is in the new year as well?

Not Crosby, he was still 17 and undrafted at the 2005 World Juniors, but a lot of other players on that Team Canada roster would have likely been in the NHL if not for the lockout.

That lockout year had an obscene Team Canada roster.
Crosby, Carter, Perry, Getzlaf, Bergeron, Phaneuf, the list goes on and on. It was a future All Star team, and they cruised to gold.

If the idea is to set a player up to succeed that season in the NHL, I have to think training camp is more important.

Goncalves (drafted 62nd) is a bold prediction
16 year-old Shane Wright is a really bold prediction

Still pretty bold for a year where all the players are available.
For comparison to McDavid btw... his 16 year old season was actually a little better than McDavid's 16 year old season.
McDavid: 66 pts in 63 games
Wright..: 66 pts in 58 games
pretty crazy.
And yes, McDavid went to the WJC that year, though he wasn't much of a factor. Also, McDavid is(was) much bigger than Wright (which matters in this tournament)
It will be interesting to see if they take him for the experience. But again, I think it will be tough considering the available depth this year.
