Default "Perfect" Video Games

We have threads on albums and movies, now it's time for games.

What is a game that is so perfect you can't think of a single thing that could be improved?

My nominations;
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Uncharted 2

What I can think of right now in no order:

Super Metroid
Super Mario World
Mario 64
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Conker’s Bad Fur Day

Was going to say Doom 1 and 2 but the brutal doom mod makes the game even better.

Metal Gear Solid on PSX. Still one of the great video game experiences of my life. Same with FF7. Playstation One had 2 grand slams that made it what it was imo.

The best thing was the physical confrontations that erupted from playing this game.

Super Mario Bros.

It’s 34 years old, launched the most successful IP in the industry, saved console gaming, revolutionized a genre, and is still a fun, tuned, and flawless game for people of all ages and skill levels.

I’ll have more to add when it springs to mind. But that is the quintessential perfect video game, if you ask me.

Seems like most people are just posting their favorite games, not necessarily perfect ones.

Framerate issues really prevent either of these from being "perfect". They don't hold up well at all from a graphical or gameplay perspective.

Then this thread is pointless. You can’t really take graphics into account or it disqualifies almost every game ever produced prior to the current gen of consoles.

Not even close to true. You can absolutely take graphics into account, especially when those graphics have an impact on the gameplay. Goldeneye has a brutal framerate, draw distance issues and texture muddiness. Sluggish framerates make playing it feel quite rough because input is delayed by that same sluggishness.

I can still pop in Mario 64 and enjoy a smooth framerate and tight controls. It holds up quite well in comparison. F-Zero X is still as fast and twitchy as it ever was. Goldeneye is a great game, but it wasn't perfect, even when it came out.

I know there's a fine line between a 'perfect' game and just your own favourite game... but Double Dragon II doesn't get much better in terms of a 2-player side scroller. 30 years after the game was released, I still enjoy throwing those jumping knees and cyclone kicks when I bust out the ol' NES. This game has incredible replay value.

River City Ransom is another highly, highly underrated side scroller. Just a stupidly fun and addictive game from start to finish.

Knights of the old republic - The writing was so strong and the twist was amazing. It was a technical master piece for its time.

Wing Commander 1 - From a technical standpoint it was way ahead of its time. The combat was actually way better then Wing Commander 2.

GTA San Andreas - Amazingly huge world, lots of content the characters were great, plus there was something about the randomness of the game

NHL 94 was amazing when it came out and still has a following today. I played that game non-stop.

Forza Motorsport 4 - Xbox 360: This is the peak casual racing sim with the best mix of cars and tracks. GT2 gets an honourable mention.

Impossible Mission - Commodore 64: A puzzle platformer that’s very challenging. The robots who chase you still haunt me. Stay awhile. Stay forever!

Return Fire - 3DO: Easily the most fun I’ve had playing games with friends. It’s capture the flag on a desert island with four vehicles to choose from and an awesome classical music soundtrack that changes with the action.

NHL 94 - Sega Genesis: I wish the new games were this fun.

Xcom - PC: I love the new games but still go back to the old one because I love the weapons, aliens and gameplay from that version.

I was serious about Pong too.
