That was just half of the story, the part where they reacquire Gagner

They originally traded Gagner for Teddy Purcell, who they subsequently traded for a third rounder.

Glad for Tobias Rieder. Seems like a good guy who had a bad year on a struggling team. Based on his play, It’s hard to fathom he didn’t score a goal all season long. He’s been one of the more noticeable players every game he’s played and I think he’ll do just fine as the team’s 12th-13th forward.

If he can use his speed and kill penalties at a decent clip, I’d certainly be happy with him jumping into the line up for stretches at a time. The 4th line needs to be relatively productive, so hopefully he gets one early and play with some confidence the rest of the season.

I can't wait to see who they trade Gagner for this year.

Ok so I’m confused!? Watching the interviews on CalgaryFlames.com today, it doesn’t sound like the deal is officially done. Can anyone confirm that he is signed?

As far as we know, they’ve agreed to terms on a contract but the deal hasn’t been made official yet.

So I would say no, it’s not technically official yet, but it will be.

Based on the way everyone laughs when Ryan Leslie asks the hypothetical question about "if" he were to sign a contract, I think it's obvious everyone knows that it's done but they're just waiting to announce it for some reason.

"Let's pretend if it were 4:00 in the afternoon..."

During the regular season, the daily cap is set at 5:00pm ET, which is why the Flames sometimes wait until after 3:00pm MT to make some roster moves official. I don't know if there are similar issues to deal with during the preseason, but I suspect we'll get a Transaction Alert from the team in the next hour or so.

At all. Ever.

Just on principle.

Those were fine days.

My main concern is that dealing with Edmonton is like trading hockey cards with your slow little brother.

He knows he has one good card and thinks it make the rest of his crappy cards better, but you really dont want any of them.
Doing business with the Oilers is smart. They routinely sink the value of players allowing other teams to get useful reclamation projects on the cheap.

This summer we sent them a total liability in Neal.

Refusing to deal with the Oilers out of principle would be a massive mistake. They routinely have players move on and rebound.

I wouldn’t mind “stinky” Hall, Schultz, Strome, Dubnyk.

If Rittich can stay healthy this year he is going to have a monster year.

Brodie has had the puck on this stick a lot tonight. I think the amount he drives the offence is vastly underrated around here.

I wonder what the delay is on announcing the signing? It's weird to see the media scrums with Rieder where everyone sort of dances around the idea of him signing when they all know it's done.

It was funny during the intermission when Lucic just casually mentioned that Rieder signed last night.

Maybe doing a couple Ptos together? Cuts at the same time? You’d have to think the crew they are taking on the team building thing tomorrow or wheneveris going to be the final group, not pulling guys out and cutting them while there.

Are there cap implications/savings as far as timing of signing, however minute?

I don't believe so. As far as I know, the cap doesn't start counting until the regular season begins.

Not that I'm looking for a savior but Reider has been pretty useless from the games I've seen him in.

I understand that he's eating popcorn on most nights but when he does suit up, it really bothers me that he's taking up a roster spot that we could have younger guys gain some NHL experience in that sheltered 4th line role instead of Reider.

He's fast, that's for sure. But when I watch him, I am not surprised that he had 0 goals last year. Of course, I am not as good of a talent evaluator as the Oilers Bob Nicholson.
