Default Outdoor rinks in the mountains

Anybody know if there are outdoor rinks currently open for skating in the mountains near Calgary?

I’m thinking about Banff or Lake Louise. Not necessarily a rink with boards, just outdoor skating somewhere really picturesque

And specifically curious more so about outdoor venues that are known to open now, rather than awesome places that may be open soon

Any help is appreciated!

North side of Canmore there's one right after the traffic circle if you just follow the road straight up the hill. On the east bank of cougar creek.

There's Larch, which usually has good ice on Weeknights.

Same one. Commonly busy, often with younger kids. Weekends lots of out of towners.

Haven't played ODR in Banff, as they have quite cheap shinny at Fenlands Monday - Thursday.

Lake Louise has a dope, covered ODR, beside Charleston (Chucktown), employee residence.

If you're looking for truly picturesque; Lake Louise or Lake Windermere. Only pleasure skated on LL, but tons of shinny on Windermere.

I passed a puck around with strangers at Johnson lake last winter. Someone had shoveled a couple rectangular rink shapes around the lake. That was a really great time, would recommend.

Are all of these confirmed to be open now? Looking to get some pics skating outdoors for Christmas cards in the next couple of days

Thanks!

Lake Louise was definitely not open as of Friday. I'm not sure what would be around Canmore right now, it rained all last week, though the last few days have been a lot colder. Some years there is fantastic skating on Spray lakes. You can also skate at Gap Lake, and Lac Des Arcs. I'd search social media to see if anyone has been to any of them before going. Conditions have been weird in the mountains this year.

^ appreciated. I haven’t been monitoring temperatures in the mountains this year, just looked at the weather yesterday and saw it was pretty chilly.

Wasn’t sure if it had been colder out there long enough for some of the rinks to be set up

So far I have not been able to find any evidence of outdoor skating to be done

Abraham Lake up by Nordegg is beautiful. The lake is full of methane bubbles and it looks super cool. Like a big lava lamp

I pulled up what appears to be some lake skating already available, checked out Instagram using "wild skating" as my search phrase.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CW5-rz0pb76/ (Middle Lake)

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWg9SCev9Qh/ (Johnson)

Tanya Koob is a good resource, you can find her blog and other social media, easily, with google.

Check Paul Zizka's social media out as well - he often takes pics of himself & others out skating on the natural ice surfaces in the area.

Elladj Baldé, if he's not out of town at appearances, does a fair amount of wild ice skating as well. Same thing, check out his SM. I'd imagine you could contact any of them through social media and find out information from them.

In Canmore as well the pond on the corner of Mallard alley and 7th Ave is always setup for outdoor skating every year and it usually freezes early as it is very shallow. The town maintains it for multiple events so it is usually in decent shape and a one minute walk from Main Street.

Checked out Larch, and Cougar Creek, as I ran into town. Both are slush.

The RMO had an article a couple weeks ago, about someone going through the ice. I don't recommend any skating in the BV. We're FINALLY getting sustained below zero weather at 1,300m. As has been for most of the Rockies/Purcells/Selkirks, while precipitation has been above average, temperatures have been warmer.

I'd hedge on another couple weeks, at least.

Banff High School has an outdoor skating rink.

Fairmont has one that is public too. There's a shack and a fire pit.

We've been skating at lake Louise and the Canmore Nordic center. My guess is there are a lot of them.

I also see a lot of people skating on lake des arcs. Not sure how they don't blow away.

Most articles that I have read warn about not going out on this lake until at least January due to the nature of the reservoir underneath. The ice may not be on the surface of the lake as the water level can change significantly under the ice throughout the winter. Unless we've had some pretty cold weather for a long stretch I would be careful.

There used to be an outdoor skating rink at the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge or delta or whatever they're calling it these days by Nakiska. It is still there on google maps but not sure if it is flooded yet.
