Default Would the Flames beat these Sharks in Round 2? (2019 Edition)

Imagine if Calgary eliminated Colorado and the rest of the stuff that happened in the playoffs still happens (Tampa getting swept, Hurricanes' surging when it matters the most, etc.), what would the outcome of a Round 2 Calgary-San Jose matchup be knowing what we know now?

I say Sharks in 6.

If Calgary has been playing well enough to win round one, they could have been playing well enough to win round 2.

Not how we were playing in round 1. If we play how we played against the Sharks in the game we won to clinch the west then yeah.

I’m not going to lie I’ve lost a lot of faith in this version of the Flames core. I haven’t posted a lot on it, but it’s crazy how 1 playoff series can shake confidence and undo what the season was.

I don’t think they have it. I honestly don’t. They’ll be competitive but- when push comes to shove- that’s actually precisely it- they refuse to push and shove and grind and fight for it. Primadonna hockey won’t cut it in the playoffs.

I think most flames fans share your thoughts, this core will have to prove they can win next season or I think a major piece will be moved out. All we can do is hope this core got a rude awakening. Still disgusted with our effort and the amount of shots the Flames gave up. There was no excuse for how they got dominated.

Absolutely. There can be no repeat of that playoff performance. If so we will see a #### return on assets and a painful 2nd rebuild. Do not want!!!!!

Maybe? It's hard to say. Both Calgary and Tampa looked like they didn't take their opponent seriously despite being the better team and thought they could just coast through the first round. So if Calgary came out and actually gave it their all, yeah they'd probably beat the Sharks. But they didn't.

Yeah I'm still not over that pathetic display in the first round. No way we would have won in round 2 with that mentally weak bunch.
Prove me wrong next year Flames please.

That was easy. I was thinking this way a bit in mid-series when I was caught up in it, but with the number of huge upsets in these playoffs I've written it off as just a strange year, and wishing this strange year didn't have to happen when the Flames are just about the best they've ever been. I mean Tampa looked like a massive turd but I don't see them making too big an overhaul unless it's for cap reasons. Things change too much from year to year to write the core off in 5 games.

Depends. Which Flames' team shows up?

We were not ready for the playoffs, and that still bothers me and will still bother me until game 1 of season 19-20.

I don’t know. There are certainly questions about the team. Look at the past 5 years

- They blew it up and the young core started to take over. They rallied under Hartley and overachieved.
- They got off to a brutal start that they never dug out of, and quit on Hartley in his last year
- They made the playoffs and choked for Gulutzan.
- They sucked and then quit on Gulutzan (also around ASG time and kind of when the team cut ties with Jagr)
- They choked with Peters

I still can’t help but think a lot of the blame on this exit lies on coaching. Peters had the ‘rebuild complete’ roster, the best team on paper in many, many years. They rolled through the league Nov through January.

We saw a mediocre team post all star break, when games get more competitive. They got the weak division but SJ put up one stinker of a run down the stretch.

Team pace was brutal against Colorado. Failure to adapt was frankly baffling, and you don’t get repeatedly outshot 50-20 when you have a solid game plan.

No. The post all-star team wouldn’t beat any other team in the playoffs

It sucks to have to wait a year to see if they can figure out how to fix what stinks

No. Calgary wouldn’t have beaten Ottawa in a playoff series the way they played this year.

If I'm imagining things, the Flames are winning the cup, forget about this 2nd round crap.

Well, the point of the question is that a different Flames team showed up and beat Colorado. Or at least I think that's the point.

Flames would have been swept in four, which is not much worse than how they fared in round 1.
