Pretty good return for the Hurricanes. You’d think it will work out to 2 2nds.

Looks like they were asking for a 1st, couldn’t get it, and this is where they settled.

Extra draft picks sure come in handy at the trade deadline.

I think he will carve out a nice career as a PP specialist but I think his poor skating is going to make him a liability in his own end at the NHL level. If I had a choice between Kylington and Fox I would take Kylington every time because of his skating ability.

In these situations I have never understood why the NYR gave up any assets. He only wants to play for your team, why not wait until he’s UFA?

They get him a year sooner, which has value...

I think two 2nds is the going rate for getting the player and not getting accused of tampering.

A lot can change in a year. Maybe Fox's best friend gets drafted by the Islanders or something. Maybe Fox has a list of teams he's willing to sign with. Maybe the Rangers just want to make their organization better sooner

I don't know if you noticed but the Rangers sold off a lot of players and had a lot of assets to put in play.

Completely different scenarios. Had Erixon not signed he would have gone back in the draft and not have been a free asset for the Rangers to sign for at least another two years. More importantly, the Flames would have received the 54th overall pick in the NHL as compensation if Erixon didn't sign. So really the difference between trading Erixon (2 2nds) and not signing him (2nd) was a single 2nd round pick and throw-in Horak.

While still a year away, had Fox committed to school he would have been able to sign anywhere (i.e. Rangers) and the Hurricanes would have received nothing in return.

I think this situation is different enough from Erixon that I've no need to feel bitter about him. He didn't lie about his intentions right up to the signing deadline while simultaneously engaging in massive tampering with the Rangers.

Won't exactly be rooting for him to succeed either though. If anything, Fox becoming Tom 2.0 in terms of career trajectory would be fun from a chaotic-evil point of view.

But there's no risk to drafting college players, folks. Anyone who says there is is just fearmongering.

We threw in a 5th rounder as well.

Trade was basically a 1st round pick and a 5th round pick for two 2nd round picks and a former 5th round pick.

In the Fox trade it is basically a 3rd round pick for a 2nd rounder and a 3rd which may turn into a 2nd round pick.

I would say objectively Fox brought back a bigger return.

There is risk with every single pick.

I think the Flames did amazingly well by drafting Fox. They managed to use him as the final push in a deal they really benefited from.

There is no MORE risk to drafting a college player than there is to drafting any player from anywhere else.

Any player can be drafted...wait 4 years without signing...and become UFA. No?

Difference imo was that Erixon was going back into the draft if not signed and could have been picked by anyone again. Fox has one year then he is free to go wherever he wants which is clearly the Rangers.

I believe CHL players can become free agents 2 years after their draft...

In fact I think college free agents have even less leverage (and therefore should be more attractive to NHL teams) because they're under control for the full 4 years

Yeah I don't think Flames or Hurricanes are much regretting getting involved here. Everybody got something out of it. If the Rangers get a player out of this, they're going to be fine with this too.

Rangers are rebuilding, so it's a good opportunity for Fox, much more so than with the Flames or Hurricanes who both already have plenty of good young defensemen.

CHL players not signed after 2 years re-enter the draft not become UFA. That is what was going to happen to Erixon
