One member of the OBC exiled to Russia. Take note, um, everyone else.

With Putin signed to play on McDavid’s wing. He is the most elite forward not in the NHL right now.

This is likely why Alexander Yelesin bailed on the team. He sensed the incoming winds of No Goodness.

Honestly, Putin might be pretty impressed

Bwahaha...

1. Craig MacTavish was never fired as Edmonton Oilers coach. He resigned when the time was right. And now, with Ken Holland coming in as hockey boss and fans howling for change, MacTavish again has the good sense to leave when the time is right.

So.... do the Oilers set Kevin Lowe out on an ice-floe with the title "Director, Northern Scouting?"

This is a massive loss for the organization. Just look at the juggernaut he built in Bakersfield.

"Alright, well that should just about do it.

Seems like as good a time as any to split"

Doubt this is much more than "Mac offered something" and he'll play it that this one 'won him over'.

Yeah, they had quite the impressive "playoff run" this season.

* Playoff run as defined by the Edmonton media: Being eliminated in the second round by the Ducks organization.

They still have Katz, Lowe, Nicholson, Coffey and the Gretzkies (Keith was kept on as AGM right? Edmonton doesn't fire people).

So, as emperor Palpatine would put it, "I'm afraid the OBC will be quite operational when 2019/20 arrives."

That's almost thread title material right here.

As GM, MacTavish made a number of good moves, such as: bringing in David Perron in a trade for Magnus Paajarvi; trading away David Perron for a first round pick (which Peter Chiarelli would later squander on the Griffin Reinhart trade); signing Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to a long-term deal at a decent price; bringing in veteran centre Derek Roy in 2015, who boosted the play of Nail Yakupov for a time; signing college free agent Jordan Oesterle; trading for Matt Hendricks; trading away Ales Hemsky for picks, even as some so-called analytics gurus clamoured for the slowing-down winger to be signed long-term for big dollars; realizing that the Oilers needed some skilled AND powerful players, so using first round picks on Darnell Nurse and Leon Draisaitl; trading away Ladislav Smid just before he reached his best-before date; trading for Ben Scrivens, who had a brief but strong spell with the team; promoting Bob Green in scouting, as Green would take Tyler Benson and Caleb Jones in the 2015 draft.

LMAO: Perron was a one season wonder and not only was the (late) pick they got squandered, Mactavish also got dud Klinkhammer. RNH's deal wasn't decent at the time, and probably still isn't value. Oesterle signing a "good move"?? Derek Roy was so good he was out of the league the next year. Hemsky had two better years after he was traded than the two most recent when he was with Edmonton. I see he didn't mention what picks they were (5th and a 3rd a year later). And picking a consensus guy like Draisaitl is "good"? OK and Nurse - he was immediately followed by Rasmus R and Bo Horvat. That's some brilliant pick?

Talk about a list of "meh at best".

If anything it signals that he has the authority to make changes. Itwill be really sad if before the season starts Lowe also steps away, rather than being thrown out.

Wether he was fired or saw the writing on the wall and bailed, this immediately makes Holland the best exec that team has had in 2 decades

Of course, this ignores the fact that Smid reached his best-before date earlier than he should have because the Oilers medical staff did their usual quality job of helping a player recover from injury. Smid played his final NHL game just two weeks after his 30th birthday. There's no reason a solid defensive defenceman should have to end his career that young.

Also, even with the injuries, Smid still played over 100 games for the Flames. Meanwhile, Horak played 2 games for the Oilers before deciding that Russia was a better option. Brossoit played a total of 28 games (20 starts) with the Oilers, and racked up 7 wins before skipping town to go to Winnipeg, where he got 13 wins in 19 starts this season.

Even if they thought they were unloading damaged goods in Smid (a failure of management in the first place), I don't know if I'd really be praising that return or what they did with it.

Also (this failure is more on Chia than MacT), the only reason they lost Brossoit for nothing (Group VI UFA) was because they couldn't get him into an extra 5 games last season -- a team that missed the playoffs by 17 points couldn't find five extra games to give to Brossoit to keep him from becoming a UFA. I guess you have to make sure Talbot gets his 67 starts so you can finish 23rd overall.

The best part is, they repeated the same thing with Stolarz this season.

Still somewhat surprised. Someone I guess from the OBC had to fall on a sword it appears, for optics if nothing else, and it wasn’t going to be Lowe, so MacTavish gets thrown under the bus, quietly.

Notice none of the usual negative press articles vaguely foreshadowing things and pushing him out the door a few weeks in advance, as was orchestrated time and again for departing players, coaches and GMs, once the scribes got their instructions from Lowe?

MacTavish was the minion carrying out Lowe’s edicts, and any moves as GM were collaborations, at best with Lowe. After Lowe’s famous tier 1 fan presser, he stayed out of the public eye and shoved MacTavish out there to fumble through year end pressers and trade deadline misses etc. Then forced MacT to stand behind the bench with Todd Nelson. Generally took the abuse for decisions he and Lowe made jointly. Or just Lowe did and he carried out. He also was the eyes and ears for Lowe day to day, and certainly was the last few years when Lowe was forced to the shadows when Chia took Lowe’s POHO job.

Interesting now without that longstanding layer of insulation, but Lowe will weasel his way out of any fingers pointed at him, as he has done for the last two decades up there.
