It came to mind for me because I now live in both cities seasonally

Melnyk is a strange breed. Never saw anyone like him in my time in YYC. He's a public figure that truly unifies the population against him with his bumbling and incompetent buffoonery. He's basically the human equivalent of the new O-Train line

They have are A+ at drafting and scouting talent, but F- at retaining their superstars.
That would be a solid team even right now if they just kept them

Hoffman - Zibanejad - Stone
Foligno - Duchene - Turris
Dzingel - Brassard - XXX
XXX - Spezza - XXX

Chara - Karlsson
XXX - XXX
XXX - XXX

Bishop
Lehner

Drafting A+
Retaining players F -
Asset management in general F-

What do they even have to show for this plethora of great players they have only recently gotten rid of in the last 5 years...

Maybe, just maybe, if he didn't go out there all the time babbling on about everything and anything regarding the clubs hockey operations and putting his incompetent fingers absolutely everywhere they don't belong, maybe then someone would make himself available to assume hockey responsibilites with the Senators. I can't believe how he keeps putting himself in the middle of everything despite everyone everywhere telling him he shouldn't. Such a stupid, stubborn man. I don't even care a tiny little bit about the Ottawa Senators, but even I find myself at odds with Melnyk, which should tell you the magnitude of his failures.

It's a pretty big issue that being rich is the only damn thing you need to own an NHL club, unlike any other position in the league which demands a whole lot of skill and experience. Except in Edmonton of course.

The difference between rich and wealthy is huge

I concede your point, but they wouldn't have had Duchesne if they kept Turris, nor Brassard if they kept Zibanejad
