Deep forward skill. Probably well into the 2nd half of the 2nd round. Personally I would not trade down below the top ten of the 2nd. But if it were to happen I'd try to land an extra 2nd.

And to add to my previous posts today. There's some really good D men out there. But the level of skill pushes those who would be ranked as early as the 2nd round up into mid 1st territory. It's pretty common for D men to jump way up the draft. Leaving even more forwards to pick from @26-31.

Frolik and Brodie should be able to bring us back some solid pieces.

That is of course if Brodie is not traded for Kreider.

Thing is, the later you draft, the less likely there is a "BPA" and the more likely there are a bunch of guys with about the same talent level, in varying positions and sizes.

Yeah, sure. Except the two previous poster were saying "We don't want defence" brushing aside that position outright to be drafted. Not smart IMO

Flames' Director of Amateur Scouting Tod Button discusses the upcoming entry draft and how his staff are preparing.

For our purposes, it's more about the travel schedule during the year, who you're trying to track and who you're following, right? I live in Ontario and I was out West maybe three times last year, and I was out West a lot more this year because of the quality of players. It changes year by year. Sometimes I spend more of my time in Europe, but this year, there weren't as many late birthday Europeans this year, so we didn't have to spend as much time there during league play. But you still go over to watch other guys. There's a German kid playing pro over there. We don't usually spend a lot of time in Germany, but we were in Germany this year to catch up on this kid. Every year's different, where you travel to, what you focus on, and the depth of the draft.

I like how he said 20-50. I have the same POV. Tons of talent 20-50. It's a take what you want kind of draft. What I want and what the team takes are different things but I like about 20 forwards in the 1st and 2nd round. So much to choose from.

And I can't help but think that if Knight gets to 26 the Flames scoop him up .

Todd talking to Craig: "Ya, scouting has changed a lot,we even went to Germany to scout one kid this year."

Craig " Hey everybody, Flames are going to draft the German kid in rnd 1!"

Todd reads TSN article, "God, my brother is an idiot."

Hasn't Craig been pretty bang on with the Flames? Maybe not the mock draft but it seems that his random players that are ranked way higher usually align with the Flames. Jankowski is one example.

Yes, Craig had him at 14th, significantly higher than most (if not all) rankings which had him in the second round or later.

14 was the Flames pick before they moved down.

He also had the Flames taking Juolevi.

When did he say that? His final rankings had him at 9th.

Found it. Actually pretty accurate since he's assuming Tkachuk is taken. Got the top 6 right, just in a bit of a changed order.

No. You would think he would be bang on with his brother being our head scout but he isn't. He was a bumbling idiot when he was GM and nothing has changed.

Craig has his opinions that inform his rankings, but Tod has his opinions AND roughly 15 people on a scouting staff.

What do we estimate the probability that Kakko goes #1 instead of Hughes?
Certainly Hughes is still the likely top pick but would it be unthinkable for Kakko to supplant him? I'll put the odds at 20% but rising.

I would agree with this. There's a pretty decent consensus in the scouting community that it's Hughes at 1, Kakko at 2 and Byram at 3. And then: chaos.

They're both #1 picks in my eyes. If the Devils feel that Kakko is the better player, then there's nothing wrong with that. He was one of the best players in a men's league and is also more NHL ready than Hughes in my opinion.

Certainly not unthinkable. Kakko is putting on a show at the worlds. And, They have some good young centers that they can kind of take Kakko as the Taylor Hall replacement. Think of the money saved they can use elsewhere.

The closer it gets to the draft, I think the more realistic the idea becomes.

starting to remind of the Taylor/Tyler debate... both will be very good players imo, but i could at this point, with Kakko performing so well...

Kakko is a big kid so even if he isn't quite as skilled (arguably), his size might allow him to hold up a bit better in the games where open ice is hard to find...

a couple of mock drafts that have capsule write ups:

I have been thinking for a while that NJ takes Kakko #1. They have a history of having some of the best scouting in the game and I think Kakko is not only the best player but a better fit need wise as well. They already have their #1 future C in Hischier and they also have youth in Zacha and Coleman up the middle. On RW all they have is Palmieri. Assuming they can get Hall done long term a first line of Hall/Hischier/Kakko going forward is going to be deadly. Hughes is a perfect fit for the Rangers too. Totally makes the most sense on paper which is why I am probably wrong. I have Kakko to NJ, Hughes to NYR, and Byram to the Hawks as the top 3.
