So what mental illness did Joker have exactly? Or how about Natalie Portman in Black Swan? Or any character in One Flew Over the ####oo’s nest? Or Hannibal Lector? All true to life portrayals of mental illness? Or superhero movies masquerading as real movies because they weren’t 100% accurate in their depictions?
Not every movie depiction needs to be exactly true to life to have depth. Sometimes they’re just movies. If you want everything to be real, then cinema isn’t for you.

I fail to see how superhero movies are so much worse than the action movies of the past. It's not like Indiana Jones, Die Hard, 48 Hrs, Alien, Predator, RoboCop, Terminator, Mad Max, Rambo, James Bond, Taken, Con Air or Bad Boys are deep cinema. They are just fun action films but yet people look upon superhero films as lessor films.
There is a reason why characters like Batman , Superman and Spider-Man have stayed popular for 75 years. Studios have been trying to crack the code of superhero films for many years but outside of Batman or Superman they weren't able to due to technology constraints. Imagine what an Iron Man movie would have looked like in the 80s. 1989 Batman was the highest grossing film, 1978 Superman was the 2nd highest grossing film that year, 1981 Superman II was the 3rd highest grossing film that year.

I disagree with this.
I think the whole Pixar Animation revolution was because 'It was a breathe of fresh air in a genre that has become beyond stale'.
And that genre has evolved a lot in some cases trying to tell more ambitious stories in the last 30 years than ever dared to try in the years of animation before that.

Pixar is stale. Toy Story 4? they should have just left it at 3. Disney is just a house of stale sequels.

Toy Story 4 sure. But really Disney Animation / Pixar sequels aren't actually all that common. Really only Toy Story has a long run (and even that is 4 movies over 25 years) most franchises are 1 movie, and 2 at most.
I think it was their more "mature" animation that really is what was the animation storytelling revolution, and not necessarily stuff like the first Toy Story (which was more a revolution from a technology perspective.)
Disney Animation / Pixar movies like Wall-E, Up, Inside Out, Coco, Zootopia, Soul (looks like it) and even Finding Dory are all movies that are still a big departure from what traditional animation (pre-1990) would have been trying to do from a story telling, tone, and ambition perspective.

I’m sorry but your posts really just come across as you being angry that people see things in a film that you don’t. I’m not even sure you’ve seen Joker, I certainly wouldn’t call it a film for kids.
And on that note can we stop being condescending and saying superhero movies are for kids? Clearly they’re for people of all ages.
You don’t have to like Joker but you’re flat out wrong that superhero movies can’t have depth. You’re argument is “they can’t have depth because they’re movies meant to entertain”. That’s ridiculous.

Cars had 3 movies, and a spin-off with it's own sequel.

Joker is to superhero films as Eyes Wide Shut is to pornography.

And Incredibles, Nemo, Monsters. Pixar has had plenty of sequels. And a lot of them really good IMO.

Late to the party on this one, but I just watched Parasite.
That movie deserves every bit of praise it's gotten. I highly enjoyed. I found myself laughing, sweating, and emotionally involved through the movie.
The twists were entertaining as hell. The first part of the twist at the end was obvious, but still very well done.

As someone who’s halfway enjoyed the cheesiness of the previous Rob Zombie films about the Firefly family I must say that 3 From Hell was garbage. Abysmal. Quite possibly the worst film I’ve ever watched. The acting, the directing, the writing, all of it is objectively crap. Those student films on amazon shot on an iPhone are better. It felt like it was a four hour long movie and isn’t even enjoyable in the good-bad kind of way.

With all the hype surrounding Parasite I went into it expecting to be disappointed and I was extremely surprised that I wasn’t. That truly is a fantastic film. The subtitles were a bit jarring at first but once you get used to them they aren’t a big deal at all. I loved it.

Just watched Parasite myself, meh.
Not a bad movie, just surprised at how much hype it's received having now seen it.

I kinda liked it, some really sudden tone shifts. Kinda felt the lawn party scene didn't work,
though I get its purpose with the "metaphorical" subtext. 7/10.

What an old school post for this thread. "Here's the movie I like, here's where to find it, enjoy."
Thank you sir!

Parasite is great and full marks for winning. I was lucky to see it a few months back.
Does not follow any of the familiar Hollywood tropes and cliches and was balls to the wall. The film doesn't play it safe, maybe in part due to the country and culture it's based in, going for full discomfort and suspense as well as shock at certain parts, which makes it that much more interesting. Great bits of humor to top it off.
I'm so glad it won.

My wife and I went to Parasite on Friday night, I was perplexed as to all the accolades it has received. The writing was well done, as was the acting but I really was left wanting more. As in, it needed more oomph.
My wife watches alot of Korean films and when there is a good one, I watch them with her. IMO, there is much better out there.
But good on the academy to finally bring foreign films into the mix. Although i suspect there was more reasons than "quality" that brought in four Oscars.
Meanwhile, we took the kids to Sonic today and had a great time!! lol
