Have to think Treliving wants to get this done ASAP, before other comparable RFAs sign for stupid money. He can’t afford to play chicken into August and September like he did with his other RFA signings.

That is what every GM wants, but it is simply not how this works anymore. The players and their agents know that it is within their best interests to push negotiations as long as possible. Treliving has no control over when his player signs an extension, unless he just gives him a blank cheque, and we know that (thankfully) won’t happen.
I would be shocked to see any of the big-ticket RFAs locked up any earlier than August.

Agreed...or one signs on offer sheet in early July. Which, for the first time in a long while seems like a real possibility.

I wonder if Calgary got a super offer on Tkatchuk whether Brad would pull the pin knowing full well what these high level rfa's are going to get. I would luv a big offer sheet come in and take the 4 firsts and run. I just shake my head thinking Tkatchuk could get $8m plus depending on term.......

The problem with this is that the Flames are contending now.
I get you can trade draft picks for players, but good luck trying to get much value for a draft pick 4 years down the road.

What a ridiculous take. What do you expect to get with one of those four draft picks? Why do you even want draft picks anyway if you don’t want high level RFAs that you have to pay to keep?

So why don't you want to pay Tkachuk what he's worth? I mean, as a franchise you should want to have an $8m player... if you got the 4 draft picks for him, would it not be with the hopes to draft a few players that could one day be worth $8m+? Tkachuk is a star in the league, with superstar potential IMO... he's what a team is hoping for when they draft a player, so why on earth would you not pay him to stay on the team? The idea is to build a good team, within the cap. The goal isn't to avoid signing stars to deserved contracts.

Tkachuk is a Tkachuk, but 4 first round picks could be anything! One of them could even be a Tkachuk!

Especially since they would clearly offer just under the 4 1sts threshold at around 10.5m. Enough to get him signed, enough that the compensation doesn't sting, and enough to put Treliving's balls in a vice thanks to a lack of cap space. I'm actually really worried that Tkachuk is going to end up at 5 x10.5m or so. Tkachuk holds most of the cards here as RFA years on elite players seem to mean nothing anymore.

LOL insert 'you're telling me there's a chance' here
We would be lucky to get one impact player and 3 'busts'. It's just the way the draft rolls.

Any situation involving Matthew Tkachuk leaving the Calgary Flames should be treated as an undesirable worst-case scenario. He is a tremendously important player who would be nearly impossible to trade for more impactful assets. He is of vital importance to the long-term success of the team and a collection of draft picks should be viewed as a pittance in comparison to the immediate and continuing benefit offered by the services of Tkachuk.

Need to alter that multiple Hudler pic into a multiple Tkachuk pic. What a nightmare for the other team.

Help, save, whatever.

At what amount would Flames fans take the compensation on Tkachuk and let him sign an offer sheet?

For me, anything over 9 mil per I’d strongly consider letting him walk. Anything between 8-9 mil I sign begrudgingly.
