Since I am also in, that means everyone is in.

I won't be able to bring games though, as there is no way I am driving to deep NE and back in this mess to pick up the couple I wanted to bring.

I'll see if I have suitable extras to bring to cover the shortage!

I agree.

I really liked Lords of Waterdeep, but the other 2 were very good as well.

Gotta say, been playing Race for the Galaxy vs. the AI and I'm not loving it... a good early setup makes it damn tough to catch up because if you don't use Consume 2x every other turn you fall even further behind, making it so you only really have half your turns (when the leader is using Produce) to try to engineer your turnaround.

I have been trying it as well and I cannot believe how hard it is to even do half decent. The AI has even more than doubled my point total on some occasions, when certain strategies built around 6 cost developments have done extremely poorly.

I am clearly not using the x2 consume as much as needed.

RFTG Strategy Guide

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2952...strategy-guide

I still only win about 10-20% of the time vs AI. It seems you really have to watch you don't pick actions that also help the opponents. I think the game is much deeper than it would seem.

Be careful with dominant species. Its not a short game and like any 3 hour game with a relatively weak theme it can be difficult to convince a game group to try out.

I plan on playing the following this weekend with my semi-regular game group in Edmonton.

Eclipse, Civilization, Rails of Europe, and maybe a game of Diplomacy-esque Game of Thrones. And throw in some Dust Tactics and Space Hulk 2 player games.

I think we all really liked Lords Of Waterdeep. The theme is kind of painted on, and not that important to the game, which is basically a worker placement game like Caylus. The components are excellent. It would be good if the factions each had a unique power.

There are some heated debates about the game on Boardgamegeek. Some argue the "take that" cards (ex. mandatory quests) punish the leader too much. Others claim the builder Lord is too powerful. I think both of these issues can be guarded against, and don't break the game in any way.

Aquire is a neat little investment game where you can directly control how well your investments do (and block or put your opponents at a disadvantage). The mechanics are simple but offer a lot of strategy. I don't like to play it often because it can get pretty stale quickly, but everyone I've played it with would play it again.

Lords of Waterdeep is a simple, but great, worker placement game. It's easy, fast and fun. As troutman said, the theme is unnecessary, but you can have fun with it if you want. My only major knock on it is that it feels like there isn't a lot of incentive to interfere with your opponents - but that could also be my inexperience with the game.

I can't really review Race for the Galaxy that well since I've only played it once. I wasn't overly impressed with the game in the first playthrough but I would play it again to give it a fair shake. No comment otherwise.

I just won an RFTG game against two AIs with a 3-card (!) tableau.

Started with Earth's Lost Colony (1 VP, Consume for 1 VP, Produce 1 Novelty).
Round 1 settled Plague World (0 VP, Consume 1 Gene for 1 VP + 1 card, Produce 1 Gene)
Round 5 settled Tourist World (2 VP, Consume 2 for 3 VP)

Finished with 25 VPs in 9 rounds with 22 VPs taken from the pot.

============

Had another crazy game, I won with just starting planet and developments. Galactic Federation and then just with Interstellar Bank and Public Works I was able to play develop every turn and then play whatever development I drew.

I recently won an RFTG game easily with a tableau full of ALIEN cards. A good early draw with cards that work together makes a big difference.

RFTG is a quick, but deep game.

On the surface the mechanics can be thoroughly learned in few games, but to really understand how to win against a good opponent (playing one of the basic strategies) is fairly difficult, and essentially requires you to execute one of those 4 strategies.

These strategies really boil down to figuring out the most efficient way to build victory points given the cards you draw, combined with guessing what the other players will do, based on what strategy they seem to be executing and choosing actions each turn that both give you the most benefit, and give them the least benefit.

I have played about 20 games vs the AI, and managed to win only 1. I doubt I will play against the AI much more, since it really is frustrating, but I would have no problems playing against people.
