Marc Andre Fleury would have waived NTC for Calgary
Seems all the timing was off, regardless the price must have been sky high for him. Think this will put a but more pressure on Treliving for Smith to have a standout season. Im all for Smith, I wished we acquired him last year to be honest. Gonna pick myself up #41 when the release the jerseys.

Pressure from the fanbase? Probably. But I suspect Treliving will only feel pressure from within the organisation if he had actually had a deal in place to acquire Fleury that failed to materialize. Who knows whether he passed on Fleury, or was simply not able to bring him too Calgary in the first place?

Good work by Francis actually as he gets to the bottom of the "Fleury didn't want to come to Calgary" assumption that was out there.
I do think he errs on this line though ...

Fact is, while many saw Fleury as a logical fit for the Flames in the off-season, the club was happy with a surging Brian Elliott at the trade deadline and weren’t embroiled in serious trade talks with the Penguins at the time.

Flames were in on the Bishop talks, and the Fleury talks, clearly Treliving wasn't thinking Elliott could get it done in a playoff run.

How much Cap was Pittsburgh going to eat on his salary though? II think it would be around 2 million and that would likely have hampered say the Stone deal, or re-signing Ferland. I think at the end of all of it that was what held the trade back. Since Pittsburgh is in no position to retain any salary.
Treliving did right getting salary retained goalies in Smith and Lack.

I'm guessing a Fleury trade means we would have been out on Hamonic.
I think given the options of Fleury vs Hamonic + Smith, I'd take the current situation.
Fleury is coming off a 0.909 season on a Stanley Cup team, and Smith put up 0.914 on a team of garbage.

Meh...I just don't think Fleury is that good. He's always had a team in front of him that absolutely dominates in terms of possession time. He's only 2.5 years younger than Smith but has more miles. His last season wasn't great either. He's also a very positional goalie who is likely to be affected by equipment size changes.
I prefer Smith.

Probably not popular opinion, but I'd still take Fleury and his 115 playoff games over Smith's 19.
The team was good enough to get in with junk goaltending last season.

Would rather have Smith than Fleury straight up - never mind the cost it would have taken to acquire Fleury.
Like AC said Hamonic + Smith > Fleury

Its hard to argue against a Stanley Cup winning goalie, but I've never been too high on Fleury.
He seems like he has a bit of the Brian Elliott syndrome of choking when the stakes are highest. When he's on, he's lights out.
Consistency is what this team needs most out of its goaltending.

I guess maybe I'm hanging onto some of Fleury's playoff performances too much but I've seen series that Fleury almost singlehandedly lost for the Penguins. He's the opposite of clutch in my mind. He's had the Elliott type complete meltdowns in the playoffs. That's the last thing we need.

A better title for this thread would be:
Fleury thinks he would have waived for the Flames at the trade deadline last year

Can we get the title corrected as it's not really true...
MAF said he thinks he would have. He does not say that he did and there was a deal in place and that fell through. Massive difference.

Well, plenty of people have expressed their thoughts/opinions.
In defense of the grammar correction, I think it's an important distinction. If Fleury did waive his NTC, it meant the Flames had a trade in the works. If he only would have waived, it might have meant the Flames didn't get to that point in trade negotiations. I think that's an interesting difference personally.

I completely agree, I realized the wording myself a second after posting. I didn't think I was able to change the title myself, until being encouraged to do so. I've been reading the forums for a year+ and only recently registered, give a new guy some slack!

I think Fleury would have been a better option than Smith.
Not that I think Fleury is great, just that Mike Smith is in the twilight zone and historically players can fall off a cliff at any moment age 35 and up.
The key problem in acquiring Fleury might have been what Pittsburgh was asking rather than whether he would waive his no trade clause though.
I'm pretty sure Pittsburgh wanted to give Fleury to Vegas rather than surrender a roster player so that would reflect in their asking price for him from other teams.
