It's been kind of out there since training camp that Cutter was never going to sign with Philly

He was a no-show at rookie camp and there's been 0 communication since. Briere publicly stated that he was invited to camp but Cutter refused

I think it's more of a mentality thing than anything to do with the NCAA rules - don't CHL players become free agents two years after they are drafted if they don't sign? I know they can be re-drafted once so it would take until they are 22 to hit UFA status, but they could just as easily say they won't sign with the NHL team that drafted them they just don't seem to do it

The trouble for CHL players is finding a place to play at ages 20 and 21. NCAA players don't have to worry about their college eligibility running out before they hit UFA.

Its not just NCAA. Remember Tim Erixon basically did the same thing to the Flames.

Yeah I guess they would have to go to europe for a year or two if it played out, but the reality for top picks is very similar to the NCAA, if a top 10 pick indicates they won't sign, they would likely be traded to a mutually agreeable team for assets - no NHL team is going to let a player like that re-enter the draft as compensation is just a 2nd rounder. I don't even think they get any compensation for picks beyond the 1st round so may be even more motivation to trade those guys if they become a star prospect and have value.

I think they have close to as much leverage as the NCAA guys, maybe not quite the same but still enough to force a trade.

At the time I thought if anyone was going to finally pull that move it would have been McDavid as he seemed to be upset to be drafted there and it seemed pretty obvious to everyone he was throwing away at least 5 years of his career without winning (turned out to be 8 and counting now), but then he goes and re-signs and decides to stay in Edmonton for over a decade, into his 9th season already - go figure.

Yeah junior players can go back in the draft after two years, and also UFA after 4 years...they just choose not to for whatever reason but they could. So really no different than NCAA.

I still think it's a simple fix. Have a max rookie contract act like a qualifying offer, if you offer a player a max rookie contract you should retain their rights. Similar to a qualifying offer for an RFA.

Doesn't force a player to sign but let's them team negotiate a more fair trade.

Flyers really are the Flames eastern twin. Even have their biggest rival with horseshoes up their butt with generational talents all the time.

Seems weird to not even let them talk, even for a few minutes. Not sure what the story is there. Just weird.

Might end up being a winger at the nhl level. Depends on if Zegras and if he’s a centre long term or not
I also bet Philly asked for Zegras

Man I love Cutter. I would say I wish we had the assets to aquire him, but he probably wouldn’t want to come here either.

He's young, but this Cutter guy seems a little annoying. Pushed right past the staff?

I'm sure there's context I'm missing, but holier-than-thou attitudes by rookie players who are entering the league and bring diva energy right out the chute blows my mind.

I wouldn't want that crap as my teammate.

Hell of a deal if they did, I would personally think that the Flyers won the deal if Drysdale can stay healthy.
