Another big advantage that Star Citizen has... CIG doesn't have to "release" until they are completely ready. They can spend tons of time testing and adding content to get the game right before they release.
In that vein, Chris Roberts has said that they likely will launch the dogfighting module as singleplayer first, let people fly and blow up AI. The reasoning for that is that they could just use the stock Crysis multiplayer code but they would prefer to actually get the entire MMO backend that they have planned up and running and start testing the dogfighting module on that, ASAP, so that when it comes time for the persistent universe... the whole MMO side of things has been tested continuously for a year or so.
So it will probably be singleplayer dogfighting in December/January and multiplayer dogfighting afterwards.

I'm actually more excited for the upgrades to Squadron 42 at the moment. People seem to be forgetting this.
As good as MMORPGs can be, there are certain things that only a carefully plotted single-player game can do in terms of experience. If they can create an AAA title in single player mode, that would be fantastic because that has still been missing in the market for 15 years.
I was about to say the same thing - keen as I am on Star Citizen, Wing Commander was one of my favourites and I'm really looking forward to playing Squadron 42.
I'm more excited for squadron 42 then the Star Citizen part because I am really a single player guy at heart.
the missing element in Wing Commander up to Prophesy was the inability to have really major battles.
It was usually two ships on a hand full of fighters and one or two cap ships.
Even in Prophesy when you had a squadron against a cap ship or two with a dozen escorting fighters it didn't feel global
I really want to have that war feeling not the battle feeling. Of seeing a squadron or two of fighters in a desperate battle to punch through an escort screen while you see fleets exchanging broadfires.
I want that feeling when your desperately tied up in a dog fight and you see a flash out of the corner of your eye and you look over and see an expanding fireball where your wing man should be and three or four enemies working their way into your 6.

With all of the pirates running around in this game and illegal smugglers, I would love to see a true military faction who has to respond to distress calls in their sector, do ship inspections etc.
It would in my mind be very cool if you could sign up for a one year tour of duty with the military and be assigned to a ship as a pilot of a crewman on a carrier or cruiser.
It would also get you a salary to save towards a ship, and some kind of tech bonus.

There are already a whole boatload of do-gooder factions (Imperium, LAMP, the PACT alliance) that have guys clamoring for crew members.
AFAIK, the Squadron 42 campaign is meant to start you off on your citizenship, and you can choose to fly the clunker you get at the end of the campaign in the PU, or join up with a group and crew for them (assuming you didn't pre-buy a ship that is).
All those Idris' and Constellations ain't gonna crew themselves!
Also I'm pretty sure CR has mentioned you will be able to be "for hire" to the UEE (the overarching military faction in-game) and earn cash and rewards crewing on UEE vessels in the PU.

The Starfarer is selling well. It has been on sale for 15.5 hours and has allowed the crowdfunding campaign to rake in $587k. It will be on sale for another 8.5 hours. There is a chance it might even beat the number from Friday.
In the three day sale of the Super Hornet, Retaliator, and Gladiator the campaign made $1,547,985.

Boy if this isn't the best game ever, its going to become a lightning rod of criticism the likes of which has never been seen before because of all of the fund raising efforts.
Even if it is the best game in the world, the hardcore gamers are going to shred this thing over the most minor faults.
