No Cowboys tent at Stampede 2019?
It'll be a shame if Cowboys tent is no more - spending a weekend afternoon there catching up with friends is one of my favourite annual Stampede traditions:
Cowboys’ Stampede beer tent gets the boot due to BMO Centre expansion
Quote:
That’s because there won’t be the iconic Cowboys beer tent there at all.
Last week, $166.6 million of additional funds for the BMO Centre expansion project — which will see the convention centre double in size — were secured thanks to the federal government. But construction of phase one of the project lands exactly on the site that used to host the tent, and it’s set to start this spring.
“Cowboys were well aware right from Day 1 that (it) was actually a temporary location,” said Warren Connell, CEO of the Calgary Stampede. He added plans for the expansion have been in the works since the tent first set up behind the centre in 2010.
...
But so far, there has been no word on where Cowboys plans to relocate the popular tent and its musical festival — or if there will be a tent at all this year.
There are tickets on sale for chute passes to the music festival and First Friday, which currently list the dance hall in Cowboys Casino as the venue for this year.
Star Calgary reached out to Penny Lane Entertainment Group, which owns the night club, but did not hear back. Calls to Cowboys’ Stampede and music festival marketing team were also unanswered.
But there won’t be any room for the independent and “massive operation” to relocate onto the busy Stampede grounds.
“To relocate Cowboys (tent) onto Stampede Park ... doesn’t really work for programming needs,” Connell said.

Surely one of the multitude of parking lots in that area could be put to a better use?

Shame, where else can I spent $50 to get into a venue stinking like an airsick bag crossed with a bottle depot?

I am sure Cowboys can come up with an alternative and someone will allow them to rent their parking lot / land.
That said, isn't Cowboys getting the boot from that venue too? I thought I heard they had to leave the Casino building or were planning to do so.

Rumour is the Cowboys Tent IS happening and it's happening where the historic house was burnt down in February which is causing a lot of discussion about foul play so that Cowboys would get their tent.

I dont think we really want to over-analyze the veritable cocktail of odors that comprise Roger's Place.

Too bad. Was a great place to spend an afternoon/evening on someone else's dime.

Hopefully it’s still around. They’ve easily had the best acts the last few years.

Interesting, unless bylaws have changed, these tents have to be attached to an existing establishment and also have a maximum capacity of 3 times the venue.
so that location may be tough.

I'm heavily involved in the night life industry and the day the word broke out about this new spot for their tent, they started posting on their "@cowboysmusicfestival" instagram account which they used to promote all their tent events last year.
I don't think that was a coincidence. Regardless, they do have a spot for their tent now. I can confirm that.

You don't think someone there may have paid someone a couple grand to do it so they could do millions in revenue this July?
To say that's not possible is a bit out of left field.

Ya, i've been "heavily" involved in the nightlife in this town basically since 95. I've planned, constructed and participated in multiple Stampede tents. This is nothing new too me. I was basically just saying that it will be interesting how they get around the Liquor & Gaming and City of Calgary bylaws.
They may have a spot but there is a ton to do to get approval.
It used to be if you were good "relation" with the city or L&G, you were fine, but the 2004 red mile changed the mindset of the city and a massive amount of restrictions were put in place and the "relations" were gone.
Penny Lane has a great team, so I'm sure they will get it done but again, I await to see how.

That’s a pretty significant allegation though. Any evidence, or just a conspiracy theory?

I've been in that home with prior ownership in the past during Stampede, basically used as an after hours party house until it was condemned some years ago, when I was there it was an absolute ratnest, but to the best of my knowledge the city owned the property at the end, so I doubt there was any actual conspiracy to burn it down

If they are willing to burn down a house for a venue just imagine what they would do for bottled water!

Good spot for a relocated Cowboys tent if true, though. I knew their relocation was happening, just not this year.
