Even my son who's a staunch libertarian thinks something needs to be done about these ads. And now even the commentary during the game is about betting, without the disclaimer that "this program is a paid advertisement for (insert sports betting company) and the views of the presentors do not necessarily reflect the views of this station".
Betting is a tax on stupidity and addiction. We should not be promoting it as a respectable revenue source.

It's completely disgraceful as kids are watching
Maybe they would like to encourage smoking and drinking and driving while there at it.

Adding my vote to cutting down on how intrusive this has very recently become. Worked for years with a guy who blew a lot of his paycheque on sports betting every weekend--he'd brag when he won, but you didn't hear about the majority of the time when he lost. You just noticed when he needed to borrow 20 bucks for lunch to pay back on payday, etc.--and he didn't used to be so broke until this.
It's revenue for governments, but when they end up having to pay it back in social services spending to provide for the families whose lives are destroyed by it, I'm not sure it's worth it from the financial side, and it certainly isn't from the ethical side either.

They either need to treat it as a public health concern and ban it outright like cigarette ads, or treat it as a public morality concern and not allow it until after 10pm.
It just normalizes destructive behaviour, and introduces kids to it in the process.

I was also thinking this, it's incredibly annoying. Glad others are on the same page.

I think I'm going to bet every game here on out, 250, the Oilers to win each game. Last year I did this, in game vs the jets and they lost every single time. This year I haven't done it once.
But back to the subject, I noticed it as well and agree. People who gamble on sports, gamble on sports. We don't need to be reminded every 5 seconds. And even if you want to pick up the casual gambler, you don't need to have it on display every opportunity you get.
Vegas has a lot more control of these leagues then people think.

Not hockey yet but the Superdome in New Orelans is now the Caesars Superdome after the hotel, casino and sportsbetting company.

Unfortunately, sports betting isn’t going anywhere but up.
Quote:
The market for legalized sports betting in the U.S. exploded in 2021, doubling in size as Americans wagered more than $52.7 billion throughout the year, according to a report from Morning Consult, a data intelligence company…
The industry has boomed since the federal ban on sports wagering was rescinded in 2018, especially among younger fans.
Of U.S. adults ages 21 and older, 18% reported betting on sports at least once a month in a December survey conducted by Morning Consult. When the same survey was conducted in January, 2021, only 10% of that age range reported placing a bet at least once a month—an astounding 80% increase over the course of a year.
Experts say increases in sports betting across the country are due in part to the huge increase in digital marketing from the country’s biggest sportsbooks.

The NHL is going balls-deep.
Quote:
The NHL committed to sports-betting partnerships a few years ago, and now, thanks to its technology and the passing of some new laws up north, single-game betting and obscure prop betting will continue evolving into mainstream revenue sources for the NHL. It represents the NHL’s commitment to growing the sport by making it far more interactive. “Studies have shown you’re 10 times more likely to engage in an activity if you have some sort of outcome invested in it, whether that’s financial or otherwise,” said Keith Wachtel, the NHL’s chief business officer and executive vice-president of global partnerships. “You see that with fantasy football. People watch NFL RedZone religiously now. A lot of people don’t even watch games anymore. I’m still up at midnight on Monday night watching a kicker hoping he’s going to get a field goal without any regard of whether I have an interest in those teams. And that’s what I think the opportunity is. For our sport, which has been underserved in the betting market, the social aspect of it is going to be really important and grow the fan interest.”

Maybe Ontario should have banned advertising when they did that...talk about lack of foresight. This must make games unwatchable for those with gambling addictions. What punishment for them. Ugh.

That sounds much more depressing than it sounds fun. Addiction drives the attention economy.

Literally out of a Simpsons episode (Lisa the Greek) making fun of sports betting.
“The happiest day of my life was three Sunday’s ago. I was sitting on my daddy’s knee when the Saints, who were four and a half point favourites but only up by three, kicked a meaningless field goal at the last second to cover the spread.”

I’m pro sports betting but I do agree there needs to be a limit on the number of ads. Ontario made it so sportsbooks couldn’t promote their sign up offers but one way around that is advertising what your offer is in NJ so people would just assume its the same in Ontario.
Also it doesn’t help when you hire people who dont gamble to run these SN Bets segments. Cabbie needs to stick to something he is actually good at.

What surprises me is how there are 3 or 4 different gambling sites advertising during the course of a game. I feel like would be like every major car manufacturer advertising during a game and that has historically not happened.
Not to mention that in period or game segment where the two guys talk about betting and lines and what not

I'm honestly flabbergasted how much money there is in sportsbook betting.
I can't handle it, it's a lot, and it's constant bombardment.
As an anecdote, I play men's rec hockey, and on one of my teams I'd say 95% of the guys are obsessed and they bet on every event, every game, more or less most sports. It's all they talk about in the dressing room, who bet on what, what parlays, etc.
I don't bet on sports, and I have no interest in it. I don't really gamble at all (except the odd lotto ticket), so for me it was fascinating that every single game this season the entirety of the locker room talk was always about sports betting.
I have enough stress and anxiety watching the Flames game without any of my money on the line, as it is. No need to add to it

Yup. Cigarettes aren’t a “get rich quick” scheme on top of being potentially life ruining.
