Ritchie is PTO caliber but the others are career NHLers. They should be able to bring 8-10 points in ~40 games apiece.

Obviously they can’t with all the ice time Sutter gave them. They were NHLers but the point is you can’t have that many fillers especially when Backlund, Monahan and Dube are not performing as they are expected to. Now the team is full of people that can’t produce

I can almost guarantee that Sutter wanted 3 of those 4 players.

It’s a very small sample but the callups this year have been totally ineffective. I’m al for trying something new.

Sutter personally recruited Richardson & Lewis. They each said Sutter called them up and asked if they wanted to play in Calgary. I assume after they said yes Tre swooped in

I would trust Sutter with coaching but not picking helpful depth players. With our top six, we need better than just grinders filling the bottom of the roster.

Flames wanted Sutter, he gets to run the show I assume.

In 2004 Sutter acquired 3 top 9 forwards at the deadline. This team badly needs a repeat, for whoever is calling the shots on personnel.

I don’t see the harm in giving him a shot. Need some fresh blood and he has shown he can do well in the AHL. He might be a career AHLer but we won’t know till he gets an opportunity in NHL

Yes but I think we all agree Debrincat is a special player.

Phillips has skill, but not like him.

I don’t think Phillips is getting a shot as long as Sutter is here. Doesn’t fit the Sutter mold.

He is a solid 200 ft player

Negligible trade value. I doubt Treliving fields a lot of calls about Matthew Phillips.

Not really sure what that has to do with calling him up. Know who else had no trade value…Martin St Louis….so much so we bought him out. How did that work out?

Gawdin and him lead the AHL in scoring among U-25 players over the last three seasons. 10 combined NHL games is ridiculous.

He might be a career AHLer.

He might never get another NHL game.

But some NHL team would be smart to give him a 5-10 game look just to make sure there isn’t something there at the next level.

I remember lots of people thinking he wouldn’t even be able to translate his play to the AHL when he was scoring lots in JR.

He’s earned a shot at the next level based on his AHL play…Sutter as coach or not.

And it makes me laugh that somebody seem so against even calling him up. Would rather be “right” and be able to say “See too small, never got a shot at the NHL level. Career AHLer”

He may be small but I would guess he would care more a getting to put on the jersey of his hometown team more than anybody else in the org right now.

Just give him a shot, honestly can’t hurt more than any of the other bottom 5 forwards right now.

I would add that Sutter doesn’t gift rookies top 6 opportunities. Sutter has a very short leash with prospects . Because of his size I doubt Sutter sees him on a 4th line role. Doesn’t really fit his narrative. If they call up anybody it will be ruziaka

So he would fit right in with about half our forwards.

I'm not sure he is suited to bottom six minutes and not sure he is good enough for top six

Him missing an open net is my only real memory of him in Calgary, we have plenty of guys that do that already

Phillips seems like a great buy low candidate for a team without (m)any inherent size issues...

FLA next year comes to mind...they'll have to run pretty lean as Barkov, Verhaege, and Yandle's BO will cost about 10.2M more than this year. Tippett and Luostarinen may be due modest raises, and Vatrano's 2.5M is the only money coming off the cap (that hasn't been LTIR all year like Nutivaara and Acciari).

Which is all to say they probably can't afford to keep Vatrano and could use a little cheap skill (presumably no more Thornton, either). They don't really have any small bodies to begin with.

Who are you referring to? Reinprecht and McCammond were OK but they played zero PO games. Who else - Simon? Neimenen? Nilson? Decent players but not exactly skilled playmakers or scorers.

ETA: IMO those guys were all Sutter type players. BUT they were all younger. I think Sutter and Treliving got players that play that way but who at 36 can’t keep up as well.
