What an absolute joke. As stated previously, 95% of the countries in the world wouldn't play if politics were factored into every scheduling decision for games like these. This is incredibly embarrassing on so many levels.

Dumb decision. How well does that bode for the WC in 2026 when Canada may have to host or play against teams with dodgy politics?

The sad part about this is that 99.9% of fans not just on both sides, but everywhere, just want to watch soccer and see a good match. Politics can go to hell.

The explanation better be good. I hope this kind of chicken #### doesn't make Herdman walk away after the WC.

I think it's ridiculous to cancel this friendly, but I'm looking at this purely from the sporting perspective. You can demonize any country in the world if you wanted to...

I think it is ridiculous, we haven't banned Russian athletes from playing in this country (ie Zadorov) with the Ukraine invasion and that's on a similar level to the plane crash/shooting down, so why are we banning Iranian athletes? Are Iranians allowed to emigrate still under Canada's wide open immigration policy?
The CSA isn't totally innocent here. They should have some situational awareness and determined if this was as hot a topic as it turned into. Iran of course wants to play an opponent who beat an opponent that they play in the group stages (USA), but Canada probably had a few options on the table last month or so before they chose to negotiate with Iran, but of course now it's really too late to find anyone else for 2ish weeks from now.
So do they play at all? Or forced to rush something in the window with a CONCACAF minnow like Curacao?

Game has been rescheduled to be against Panama. Probably the best they could do - Panama is a decent Concacaf side - although who knows what kind of team they will bring.

Considering the circumstances, Panama are a decent opponent to get at the last minute. Big step down from Iran in terms of quality though.

Charles-Andreas Brym has signed with Sparta Rotterdam of the Eredivisie. Good move for someone fighting for spots behind David and Larin..

They won't care. As long as they can cash the CSA's apperance fee, they are fine. A fairly useless opponent in means in means of style of play or anything else to prepare them for their 3 opponents in Qatar.

too bad that Canada is too new and couldn't get good opponents. Korea and Japan are both hosting Brazil and Paraguay. Having the nations league actually hurts CONCACAF as Asia is free to play anyone.
Fun fact: Korea is going to its 10th consecutive World Cup and have never played Brazil.

Newness has nothing to do with it. Money talks and a big thing would be apperance fees. Iran was getting $400k.
I assume Panama will get $200k.
Brazil for sure would be double or triple that, and would also likely have been contacted well before the CSA got their act together, and also wouldn't have paid that kinda dough...they have to waste it on something else.

Why can’t we have a semi competent CSA in my lifetime?

Canadian players wanting the same money as USMNT and USWNT players is never going to happen.
I respect the players criticisms about other issues (child care, world cup tickets and accommodations for family members)
Obviously the CSA are incompetent. It's interesting that they don't even seem to control all of their own income.
