Help, save, whatever.
|
If you are a hockey fan just sign up. You won't regret it.
Plus it is interesting reading about other Canadian teams. Athletic gives a more balanced approach and isn't about playing to the local fanbase.

Portzline's scouting reports on the Blue Jackets players are interesting. I've found enough on there so far to keep me entertained.

On another note, Mirtle did an AMA on reddit today and mentioned that they will be announcing the rest of the Canadian writing teams in the next few days.

Do you have a link for the 50% off? I'm only seeing the 20% and I'm going through an article

Scroll down to the bottom of that - 50% off link but it ends in 20 mins or so.
Just subscribed. The Oilers writer is Mudcrutch. Not sure what to think of that...

This entity is scooping up some pretty impressive, established talent. I would suspect the Calgary correspondent will be of similar import.

The guys on FAN 960 just spoke about The Athletic with Stephen Brunt.
Brunt seemed unsure of the longevity of such ventures. While wishing them success, his argument seemed to be that he was uncertain that consumers would be willing to shell out cash for an online "writer's platform" over the long term. The guys all discussed the decline of newspaper sports pages as being one reason for the emergence of sites like The Athletic, but seemed to imply that there's no certainty in online journalism either.
I'm one of those luddites who still gets the Herald every morning...it's a habit I can't break. I start with the sports each day. I miss George Johnson a lot, but enjoy Kristen Odland and the beat writers for the Stamps. On Wednesdays, there's a CFL round-up that's quite good too. During the NHL season, there's usually a decent weekend sports package covering a bunch of cities' stories of interest. In the past year, the Herald eliminated then reinstated boxscores from the major N.A. leagues due to reader complaints (there still do exist many of us who like to see the baseball and hockey game scoring summaries in black and white print!)
Nevertheless, today's newspaper coverage definitely pales in comparison to even fifteen years ago, columnist and content-wise.
From that perspective, if The Athletic's focus is in part to revive some of that tradition, I wish them nothing but the best. It may finally be my incentive to switch to an online platform for reading sports news.

Just logged on and it looks like Eric Duhatschek is going to be the guy in Calgary. He just posted his first article on The Athletic.

Never thought I would pay for this sort of thing but 50% off is a heck of a deal, felt compelled to signup.
Love the format so far and no doubt they've already got an all-star cast of writers.

Just saw this as well. Looks like a lot of people will get their wish for who's writing for the Flames on this platform.
If you sign up you should pick up the other teams as well, or at least add the national coverage as there are tons of solid articles on other teams.

While Duhatschek is a great add, it doesn't look like he will be focusing on the Flames. More general NHL coverage. His twitter even says he joined the Toronto branch.

If someone has a current link to the 50% offer that would be great.

Maybe he'll just keep on rolling with his usual routine of spending winters down in California keeping Canadians up to speed on all the goings on with the Kings, Ducks and Sharks.

Yes, NHL-wide with focus on Western Canada...

Eric is going to be our dedicated Western Canada columnist with a focus on the Flames, Oilers and Jets. But he'll do leaguewide pieces, too.
