If you take the fact that it's a major cause of pollution and destroying environments, then sure.

its being built to ship oil overseas

That's probably from your deep understanding of what the oil industry is, and the balanced reporting you get from Eastern media that is basically a mirror image of fox news.

At 33% of world primary energy usage and nearly all energy used for transportation, the only thing that can replace oil would be synthetic fuels created by the energy of cheap fusion.

I think there might be a few people on this forum who think the same. Your comments don't really help your case though as they aren't backed by nothing else other than (what seems to be) your conviction.

Maybe putting down more than short condescending posts might help other users engage in a debate with you and help both sides determine where the differences lie. There are plenty of users who back up their comments with links to data and studies and I would suspect that a decent discussion over this topic might come if you provide some support to your side.

Oil companies simply supply a demand. Society needs oil, don't act like it's some detrimental thing being forced upon people against their will.

Yep, it is and the world is dependent on it. What are you doing to limit your footprint?

Also I assume you've cut out all meat from your diet then and only eat locally grown vegan otherwise you're contributing as much pollution and harm to the environment.

He should be careful, with the decline in the oil industry the government might not be able to afford paying him EI for 6 months of every year.

All oil bashing/glorifying aside...I do worry that Alberta's economy is so linked to oil that any swing the price of the commodity blows our economy around. Also, I'm not sure that

A: the internal combustion engine will be the dominant design for transportation for a long time and
B: that Alberta's oil will be price competitive (if increased environmental costs are factored into production)

Get all frothy if you want, but we should exploit the oil sector for all its worth now and (most importantly) use that to transform our economy into something else.

The oil gravy train is a limited time offer IMHO...Lougheed knew this

You are incorrect. The Houston Lateral is being built off of Keystone to bring oil to the heavy oil refineries in the Houston area.

http://www.transcanada.com/houston-lateral.html

While some of the oil will probably be exported a good chunk of it will be consumed by the US.

Plummeting oil prices have undermined one of the primary arguments for building the Keystone XL pipeline, the Environmental Protection Agency has told the State Department in a letter that implicitly urges a White House rejection of the controversial project.

The EPA letter to the State Department’s special envoy on the issue also cites new analysis suggesting that the 1,100-mile pipeline would be more harmful to the environment than earlier studies had predicted. The note was released less than a week before the Republican-controlled House is expected to cast a vote that could put the pipeline’s fate squarely in the hands of President Obama.

Earlier analyses by the State Department had suggested that the pipeline would ultimately have little impact on the environment, since the oil extracted from TransCanada Corp.’s Alberta tar-sands mines would likely find its way to refineries and markets, even if it had to be shipped over costlier rail lines. But the recent drop in oil prices changes that calculus, wrote Cynthia Giles, the EPA’s assistant administrator for enforcement and compliance.

Don't forget glasses, shoes, and jackets. Basically you're gonna have to ride bareback on that horse wearing nothing but a burlap bag.
