The Alberta snakes are back. The red snake is above the blue snake by 9 points, although it has played 2 less games than the blue snake. The red snake is 1.171 points below the black line, while the blue snake is 12.512 points below the black line. As you can see, or not see, the extra crispy blue snake dropped off the bottom two games ago. May it never return to the graph.

Your snake is pretty dead on. It shows us one point out of a playoff spot, which is exactly where we are at this point.

Sucks that this 4 game winning streak has resulted in only them getting back to a spot they were 12 games ago. Just goes to show how costly the losing and win one, lose one stretches are.

I support your decision not to expand the scale on the extra crispy graph. E=NG.

One thing the Extra Crispy 42-game one appears to show is that this year's team is a lot more consistent - much less variation (amplitude variance) than previous teams. That surprised me. The downs aren't "as down".
Gotta think about whether that makes statistical sense though!

It surprises you because while the “downs” are less severe or pronounced this season the panicked, irate reactions from a number of fans are just as strong and forceful as ever.

No need to panic if you’re happy with the team being a bubble playoff team. Personally I had higher hopes, so flirting with the absolute minimum playoff requirements is disappointing.
Apologies to the All Mighty Snek for taking his thread off topic.

What's your hurry? It takes time to become true contenders.
Look at the bigger picture.
- Johnny and Mony have returned to form
- Ferland is establishing himself as a top 6 forward
- the emergence of Jankowski is going to help a lot going forward
- Depth additions of Hathaway, Mangiapane and Kulak are going to give us options
- Bennett is starting to fight off the critics and contribute
The snake is salivating at this potential.

IMO the red Snek has been lying next to the black Snek in preparation to devour it. Just taking the first 40 games to size it up.

What’s the hurry? This franchise has won 4 playoff rounds in the last 27 years. No point in ever raising expectations I guess.

So, it must happen this year, or never?
Because from where I sit the core of the team that we are watching on the ice right now looks like they have a good four or five years window to make some serious noise. The Flames made the playoffs last season after finishing with a lottery pick in 2016, and this year they appear to be improved—if even just slightly—over last year. They seem to be trending in the right direction and with how young most of their important players are it is reasonable to expect them to be a competitive or a contending team over the course of the next several years.
I think you are being unreasonably impatient.

^I disagree. I thought going into this season that the window would be most open this year.
Smith and Gio are not getting younger. Smith will need to be replaced and none of the kids are ready yet. Giordano will still be great for a while but in 3 years it could be very risky. There should be a replacement ready to go but there are no guarantees.
Backlund is still cheap and starting to go past his peak, Monahan, Gaudreau, Hamilton are all in their prime.
The only impact players that will (probably) be better in the future are Bennett/Janko/Tkachuk and they're playing at high levels already. Everyone else is in their prime or on the decline. The time to win is now.

No one can project a 5 year window, particularly for a team that has yet to accomplish anything. There are 3 players under contract for next 5 years including this year so the clock is ticking. Nothing the matter with that.

It isn't like the Flames can win a series after 40 games. That is the thing that I don't get, your expectations can be higher. That is fine, shouldn't the team get a chance to play the season to see if they can live up to those expectation?
After 20 and 30 games some were completely writing them off. It is a looong season and they are right in the thick of things. You can reach out and touch the black snek. You should do it.
I also won't consider Gaudreau and Monahan in their primes. They say NHL players start getting there at 24 and 25. I think they are on the cusp but not quite there.

I'm in this boat as well. There's an urgent win-now window over the next handful of years while Giordano is still an elite defender. Once he takes a step back, our D core looks a lot worse until we find our new #1. Lots of potential ways that could happen, whether that's Hamilton taking a step forward in his defensive play, Brodie rediscovering his game from 2 years ago, or a guy like Valimaki or Andersson developing well.
That said our forward group should be set for years to come. A young core of Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland-Tkachuk-Bennett-Jankowski all 25 or younger is going to be excellent to build around for the next 5-10 years.
But the way I see it, we're done rebuilding. We've got good players in every key spot and the majority are signed to long-term deals. And although our core is mostly young, they're not so young that you can expect massive year-over-year improvements anymore. I don't want to be looking back 5 years from now wondering how we fell short in 2018, the same way I look back now at some of those teams from 2006-2010.
