Yeah, and this was after playing best-on-best hockey for a month in an elite-level hockey tournament. The World Cup significantly mitigated the effects of missing camp for Gaudreau in 2016. Tkachuk will be much further behind this year.

The year Drew Doughty held out, he had an underwhelming regular season. I don't believe he broke 40 points.
But he did win the Stanley Cup.
The Flames can make the playoffs without Tkachuk for X amount of time. But if they have aspirations to win it all this year, they need him.

The market is seeing sanity restored. I think Tkachuk should be in the fold before the season starts

This is getting stupid now. The guy is going to miss the entirety of camp... his call I guess, but we know how that usually goes for players.

The longer this goes on, the less I like the player. I can see this ending in a Turris type situation where he's traded in December.

No, this just seems different. Part of it is because of Dubas (needs an M and another S) started giving out bad contracts and it seems like Matty is going to get one too.

Or Iginla.
Iginla missed 3 games in 99-00 due to contract dispute.

If anything, I think the impasse shows rather clearly that he will not. Treliving simply cannot afford to pay Tkachuk anything close to what Marner is making. The cap isn't there.

And two years later was another late signing, getting a deal done in the middle of camp September 18th of 2002.

Iginla was always a tough negotiator and went for top dollar every time.

You need training camp to get up to speed and build rapport with your teammates and to also get your body fit to prevent injuries.
|
wasn't part of the problem with Gaudreau that year not that he missed camp so much as he was injured by the Wild? didn't that happen like a month into that season?

Iginla was also a legit superstar, the face of the franchise, a great ambassador, in the conversation for best player in the league, the reason many people bought tickets when there wasn’t much else to see, etc

Gaudreau had seven points in his first 13 games that season and a -11. It was a rough start and he looked bad.
That wasn't the only factor of course, Monahan was injured, hadn't played a preseason game. Versteeg was signed late from the Oilers, that entire lineplayed together for the first time opening night in Edmonton... but no doubt missing camp effected him.

Gaudreau did not play well up to the Minnesota game. He was coming off of a 1.00 pts/GP season, and started 2016–17 with 11 points in his first 17 games. He was actually better after the injury going from 0.65 pts/GP to 0.93 pts/GP when he returned.

Friedman on SN960 just said that he believes both Tkachuk and the Flames want to sign a long term deal.
