Default John Stevens Shares Darryl Sutter Stories

I did a search and couldn't find any mention of this. John Stevens shares some stories about Darryl Sutter when they worked together in LA. A great listen.

Hearing the stuff about him and players, it makes me wonder what the dynamic was with Sutter and Tkachuk! (rumors Sutter did not like his attitude).

Here's to hoping that Huberdeau feeds off the Sutter energy. Zadorov himself mentioned that he's never played for a coach before like Darryl who could tell him all the things he needed to do and that it was the best year of his life.

I don't know how Sutter feels about Tkachuk but I don't think Tkachuk ever liked Sutter. I watched just about every presser last season and he never gave Sutter any credit or even mentioned him by name when asked by media about Sutter's role in the team's turnaround last season. He would always deflect by saying nothing really changed from the year before or something similar.

It could just be that they are two very different people and their personalities didn't mix, or maybe he never really got over how Sutter cut his ice-time when he started coaching the Flames again.

I'm sure Darryl had Phaneuf flashbacks coaching Matthew.

Darryl and Keith never played at the same time. Keith didn't start in the league until 91-92 and Darryl was out after 86-87.

Maybe Tkachuk was the guy playing for himself at the end of the year, trying to get 100 points, fighting for no reason in the playoffs.

When there was talk of a rift, I said that maybe Tkachuk's attitude was part of the problem (as there were rumours). Now that he's no longer a Flame, I guess it's an acceptable possibility?

Not surprised by the detail of Sutter and his demands.

He just wants to win and he'll walk right beside these guys as they walk through the fire .....hell he'd likely walk through the fire first just to show em how it's done.

I cannot even imagine how pisssssed Darryl would have been for those too many men calls in the playoffs as well as Steven's mentioned.

Thanks OP for posting this. I can't get enough of Darryl and man am I glad he's OUR coach teaching everyone around him the importance of the details in our game.

I watch Sutter post-games more consistently than I watch games.

"You go play right wing"

Haha incredible. I wish he never upstairs went full time after 06. For such a great coach he had pretty bad taste in picking his replacements.

By all accounts, Flames wanted to move heaven and earth to keep him here and it was all the players choice to leave. If there was a huge rift, doesn’t seem like the club was too worried about it.

I love that he did state, with respect to players like Johnny, there is always a need to ensure they are protected. Referencing Gudbrandson, Lucic, Zadorov and Ritchie. It is great to see Sutter still sees value in those attributes. I do hope the Flames are equally as tough and menacing this year. Out of the 4 on that list, we still have Lucic and Z. Despite his salary, Lucic plays a role and we cannot leave it to Big Z to be that muscle. As out of the 4 listed, he is clearly the worst of the them all when it comes to throwing the fists.

Losing two heavies like Guddy and Lucic and not replace one of them will likely cause the Flames to be less tough to play against. IMO.

Sitting close to the Flames bench a few times during playoffs I never realized how pouty Gudbranson was..he seemed to always be bitching at Darryl when asked to do things a certain way. Didn't seem to take too well to constructive criticism from the looks of it, def wasn't surprised when he cashed out on a career year and left.

It's interesting how he alludes to Lucic's time with the Oilers and how Lucic losing his confidence and his game was connected to thinking all about his individual scoring and points ahead of comprehensive contribution to the team. Sounds a lot like the Oilers' ethos that has made for high priced superstars that never win anything outside of personal awards.

So what I take from this as well is that.. Tkachuk and Gaudreau left because Sutter made it clear he didn't like it when they top line was more concerned about getting points, than playing for the team?

Why would you infer that?
