But yes, I believe Tanev is a better player but I really enjoyed what I saw of Andersson Hanifin in the playoffs and think Gio Tanev will work well.
I agree. Plus, Gio and Andersson both lack foot speed. I also think 20 minutes of great Gio is better then 24 minutes of pretty okay Gio, especially in a condensed season where we need out captain fresh for the playoffs.

The Flames need to figure out how to do more with pretty much the same roster. A few minutes less for Gio, more offensive starts for the Monahan/Gaudreau lines, and a bit more responsibility for the young guys is how to do it.

It's been mentioned multiple times, but having Hanifin and Andersson as the first pairing solves a lot of potential problems, including over-usage of Gio. Tanev is also a great foil for teaching a player new to the league, because he's responsible and always engaged, never taking a play off. Look at what he did with Hughes. I think that Gio could be the same type of mentor for a younger player. I'd start with :

Hanifin - Andersson
Giordano - Kylington
Valimaki - Tanev
Nestorov (get back in the flow of the NHL)

Hot take, but I believe byy half way through the season (depending how long a season is) Valimaki will be our number 2/3 guy.

We have a stacked top 5 and not with just expectations of veterans like usual.

I dont see any way Kylington is a regular on the ice, never mind getting 2nd pairing minutes, and they didnt sign Tanev to get 3rd pairing minutes...if that happens something has gone dreadfully wrong.

I won't argue your Tanev on the third point, but Gio and Kylington might be good. Kylington is, in ways, a lot like Brodie. Just saying, it could work.

I feel like a trade with Tampa involving Bennett for Cirelli could be interesting.

Any ideas how both parties could make that work?

Injuries happen, but yeah I think the top 5 will be getting pretty equal ice time. It will be up to the coaching staff to put them in positions to succeed, Ward has the tools hopefully he can put them to use properly.

Ward is the only part of this season I’m iffy about. If Ward fails, I liken it to the way Treliving kept getting stop gaps at the goaltender position and think he goes out and big game hunts the best guy on the market like Markstrom.

Add something much more valuable than Bennett?

I feel Tampa will try to trade a bunch of guys before Cirelli. Johnson is the obvious one but apparently no one wants him. Maybe they can pay someone to take him though. Killorn probably next easiest. Gourde or Palat potentially. They would probably be open to selling cheap on Stamkos but doubtful he would accept a trade to a team that could afford him. Cirelli I see as a top 5 untouchable though so would be quite surprised if he was moved.

Lots of teams would take him...he wont waive.

Well they didn't when he was on waivers.

Too pricey for a flat cap covid offseason is all.

In other circumstances would be different.

The Flames top 5 D were all in the 20-24 min range last year. You deploy Gio-Tanev together once or twice a period and it's perfect.

I still believe Kylington is good enough to play in our top 6 all year as a regular.

He will have Nesterov, Mackey and Yelesin on his tail for ice time but I still have faith in him.

If all these guys emerge as viable options for regular top 6 mins and Valimaki pushes for top 4 mins we might have excess and could use one as trade bait to upgrade upfront.

Right...nobody wants him (Johnson) at full pop...but lots of teams would take him if there was salary retained or something else came with him...or both. Again though he has full control on that.

He is a very good and useful player that has become redundant on that TB team. He may be a bit overpriced or more correctly have to much term left, but that is a long long way from teams wanting him if they could fit him in and him accepting his destination in any deal.

There’s no way the Lightning retain on Johnson’s contract. They’ll pay a bigger premium to not be tied to any of TJ’s money.

Sounds like Tampa doesn’t want to trade Killorn but he’s the one with value and the only one without a NTC/NMC

Killorn still has a 16-team NTC for the remainder of his deal.
