I'm fine with it ...

not sure if being first in group two is meant to be 7th most likely or not, but I've said all along I see 7 teams that could win the cup this year with Calgary being one of them.

Pittsburgh
Anaheim
Nashville
Tampa
Edmonton
Calgary
Columbus

is my list. I'm not as high on Minnesota

Calgary will be better than Edmonton this season.

Everyone outside of Calgary will be shocked.

I think the Ducks are on a bit of a slow decline. They have a great young defense group, good not great goaltending, but their best forwards are getting long on the tooth and declining. I think they will be in the mix for the playoffs as always but I don't see them as a true cup contender.

No, I think a lot of others outside Calgary would be shocked, including those east (Toronto based media) and south (US media).

Edmonton is a decent team (Pass me the soap I have to wash my mouth out), but I don't see their progress as sustainable (obviously). Win now, or don't win for the foreseeable future.

With Calgary, I see a slow burn happening, and this could be the year? But if not, there is still lots of promise for the following year. Very dissimilar to Edmonton.

I don't understand why everyone has Edmonton as Cup contenders. I don't see that defence holding up without Sekera until January and Talbot repeating his performance from last season. Combine that with probably not having the same easy schedule to begin the season this year.....7 of their first 11 games are against teams that made the playoffs last year...and they actually have to leave Western Canada in the first month....

It's somebody's opinion. And it seems pretty reasonable.

I am looking forward to the disappointment and excuses when Edmonton doesn't live up to their billing this year.

I don't really understand the boom or bust description but I guess its meant to describe the second tier of contenders. That works for me, given the team's accomplishments to date.

Its just a prediction, I remember in the fall of 2006 there were predictions the Oilers would score 400+ goals for 06/07.

Yeah, let them face some expectations.

Yes, a lot, but not everyone. I was just reading the comments on that piece and there is a lot of fans scoffing at the idea of Edmonton as a contender. I doubt they were all Calgary fans either.

Why?

Most of the list makes sense to me... except Edmonton and I get that because Connor McDavid is amazing (I just think they look pretty blah without him and if you look blah without one guy then you have to many eggs in one basket to be considered a true SC contender). I also think they're selling Chicago a little short (not a lot short a little short).

I think a lot of these guys making predictions are going to look back at their Edmonton pick as a bonifide second ranking contender and wonder how they got seduced so badly and how stupid they looked.

This is the same effect as the "They're building something special up there".

I think at the end of the season the Oilers are going to be ranked up there with the Macarena as one hit wonders.

Edmonton is the epitome of boom or bust. They lose either McDavid or Talbot for a significant period and we are probably talking a 20 to 30 point swing.

Even with them, my gut says they see a drop.
