Default Discipline: How do we / do we need to improve it?

Last season the Calgary Flames spent the second-most time shorthanded behind the Anaheim Ducks, and took the most minor penalties in the league.

Breaking it down by penalty type:

2nd in roughings
T2nd-5th in holding the stick
T3rd in cross-checking
T3rd-4th in slashing
4th in tripping
T9th-10th for holding
T13th-17th in high-sticks
T13th-19th in goalie interference
T21st-23rd for interference
29th in hooking

Individually, excluding fighting majors, here's how it shook out

Penalties

Thoughts? The Flames went from basically the least penalized team two years ago to the most. You can blame Wideman effect but looking at most of the guys leading the chart above, they are guys who were not with the team two years ago...Frolik had the worst differential among the forwards, and Hamilton had the worst differential among the defensemen. Bennett could stand to improve too. However Bennett had a +13 differential the year prior. By my recollection, most of his penalties were in the offensive zone which might have been a struggle to overcompensate for a linemate's uselessness on the forecheck.

Hamilton is up 10 minors/20 minutes on career norms. Matthew Tkachuk was one hell of an excitable rookie. Have both come down to the 25 mark and you're sitting pretty.

Surprising Hamilton only drew five minors though. Suppose when you skate like a deer no one can catch you to hook slash or hold you.

Most defensemen take more penalties than they draw just by the nature of the position. The key is to have more forwards doing things to cause other teams to take penalties and for Sam Bennett and Michal Frolik to be more disciplined.

You'd really need to pull numbers from January onward.

Once the players learned the system or for the more conspiratorially minded after the flames talked to the league about penalties, the penalties taken per game went down quite a bit.

Tripping is the one that can be improved. 4th place is not ideal.

Roughing, holding the stick, crosschecking, and slashing are definitely open to a ref's interpretation. Those things happen many times during a game and don't get called. Hopefully we will improve with Wideman gone.

The rest were almost league average. All in all I'd hope for an improvement this year as long as Burke hasn't soiled our reputation with the refs

I hope with Wideman gone, it has a noticeable effect. But if that is the case, Burke and BT better be on the phone with league headquarters showing them irrefutable proof of biased reffing.

But also important to remember that the Flames were the least penalized while Hartley was coaching. I found the Flames to be a rather soft team for most of his tenure, which somewhat turned around after the VAN/CGY brawl. The Flames just didn't have the personnel to mix things up and I think Hartley knew it and kept a lid on things for the most part.

Now the team is bigger, (hopefully) tougher and younger. It's only natural to see an increase in calls. But a lot of it has to do with players just being dumb. Hamilton and Brodie took some incredibly dumb penalties which contributed to losses in the playoffs. Bennett is usually good for something dumb in the offensive zone. Johnny sometimes dives and doesn't get calls he deserves.

This, seemed like the problem has for the most part been addressed. The playoffs were ugly though.

We need way more forwards in the positive net rankings. Bennett and Frolik just out

In the playoffs even more so then the regular season it seems like the "veteran" teams get the calls.

So my advice would be sign Iginla, and Jagr, and trade for some old washed up defenceman that still has high name recognition at the deadline.

What are you talking about? The Flames were +3 in penalties drawn against the Ducks.

The timing of them were undisciplined to say the least.

I think the overall numbers will be taken care of, just with a better defence overall, and if Smith does his job. It's really hard to break down individual players, it makes such a big difference the role each player plays on his current line. Generally on most teams your top pairing d will have the worst differential.

Tkachuk shouldn't change his game one iota even though he is right up there in taking penalties. Guys are chasing him all game long so it's a net benefit. Johnny on the other hand should start using that stick of his for something other than beauty passes and sweet shots. Stick a few guys / in fact stick it to a bunch of them. That will be a benefit to his game even if they have to kill off more penalities.

I don't think this was much of an issue in the second half of last season.
