Icon39 Shane Doan retires

http://arizonasports.com/story/64979...-doan-retires/

Quote:
Shane Doan called it a career on Wednesday and announced his retirement, reports 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s John Gambadoro.

Doan spent 21 seasons in the NHL, all of which were spent with the Arizona Coyotes franchise.

The decision was reached despite Edmonton, Calgary, Nashville, Dallas and the New York Rangers showing interest in Doan as a free agent.

One of the good guys in hockey. He gets a lot of very undeserved hate around here.

While the decision was ultimately made for him, I think Doan is doing the right thing. I hate watching once great players hang on too long.

Great career, shame he never got a shot at the Cup.

Well, since you chose to go there, I will. The latter is wrong because the former is wrong. He was dirty AF. Great talent though.

And a great human. But he deserved every bit of the hate for the hockey player he was.

Maybe he will become the new Captain Canada, leading the Olympic squad.

was it? the above articile suggests several teams had an interest in him - I'd assume he did not want to take something on a PTO - but what do I know

Loyalty cost this guy a true shot at a cup. Never was a big fan of his play during the twilight years when he started getting dirtier to keep up but a solid career none the less.

The fact that the Oilers chose Steve Kelley ahead of him and Iginla will always let me have a soft spot for Doan. Yet another failure the Oilers can hang their hat on.

The Yotes should honestly retire his number their first home game this season.

From a business standpoint, that would be pointless. They'd be better off doing it in January when they'd otherwise get about 7000 fans out. Also, Doan may need some time before he goes for it given how things ended.

Good riddance. Dirty jerk wad. I don't care how talented he was. I think all the hate is well earned.

Just like Brad Treliving said at the season ticket holder meeting back in June, the mystery vet (later confirmed to be Doan) was interested in playing for one of four teams, one being the Flames, or would retire.

Yeah he was a dick on the ice but Flames fans would have loved him for that passion if he was a career Flame. He was a good player and I'm glad he retired rather than play out one more season as a part time player. Would be a great addition to the Olympic team.

Never liked him. Played like a jerk, particularly against the Flames. Just an all around annoying player, and not in an endearing way like young Tkachuk.

Maybe I'm just ignorant, but where does this repuation of Doan being dirty come from? I know he was a power forward type player in his prime and played hard. But some of you make it seem like he's Matt Cooke. Lest we forget that our own beloved Tkachuk is often seen as 'dirty' by other fans around the league...

People have good things to say about Doan on and off the ice. Not too sure where this dirty reputation comes from. Could someone Google for me and provide some examples?
