Default ACC to be re-named to Scotiabank Arena

Quote:
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment has agreed to a landmark 20-year sponsorship agreement with Scotiabank to rename the Air Canada Centre, TSN has learned.

The agreement is worth about $800 million, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

The agreement with Scotiabank, which will see the downtown Toronto arena renamed the Scotiabank Arena next July 1, is believed to be the highest-priced annual building and team sponsorship in North American sports history.

Now that's some serious dough. Add this to the list of Canadian arenas already called something similar

How many NHL arenas and various other stadiums are named after banks?

Soon Little Caesars Arena will be the only unique named stadium that's not a bank.

Well here in Canada we have an arena monopoly by Rogers, Bell, and Scotiabank. The only outlier is Canadian Tire in Ottawa. I'm surprised FGL decided to spring for the naming rights there but it would make sense to have a Sportchek arena or something.

$40MM per year.

Anyone know what the Scotiabank Saddledome deal is in comparison?

Edit: This link has a list of all the NHL naming rights. It show's the Saddledome at $1MM per year.

Rogers Arena - Rogers Place
Scotiabank Saddledome - Scotiabank Arena
Bell Centre - Bell MTS Place
Canadian Tire Centre (formerly Scotiabank Place)

The Flames will be looking for a big raise next time around. A new arena would help a lot. The Flames should be able to get $10 million per year.

The Scotiabank deal runs through 2030 so the timelines match at the rate things are going with the negotiations for a new facility. Seems a little short sighted to sign such a long term deal when the organization knew it was looking at building a new arena. Maybe there's fine print that voids the deal if the Flames move to a new arena but that doesn't sound like a great deal at all for the Flames.

Hell, if they could get half the money MLSE received the Flames could fund the new arena using sponsors money!!

And here I thought it was tough times for the banks considering CIBC recently notified us that their service rates will soon be increasing.

I can't see how these figures are correct. Air Canada paid 1.5 mil and if you look at the naming costs across North America:
https://espn.go.com/sportsbusiness/s/stadiumnames.html

The highest according to the list is Reliant Stadium in Houston at 10 mil per year. I can't see Scotia paying 40 million per year.

Trust me, the banks aren't making their money on customers paying for their bank accounts, probably not even the entire personal banking side.

People tend to like arena sponsors whose names roll off the tongue nicely. The Air Canada Centre was one of those, and I imagine people will keep calling it that for a long time since it had Canada in the name. I didn't mind the change to Scotiabank Saddledome for the same reason - yay alliteration!

Scotiabank Arena doesn't roll off the tongue well at all, so I imagine it'll be a tougher sell.
