The Flames should be doing everything they can to get Backlund under contract. No doubt about that. Treliving just has to make his salary fit in their cap matrix long term.

Bonus Flames! I have no doubt Backlund has another career year.

If he isn't re-signed by the deadline, he'll be re-signed after the deadline. Simple as that.

If he isn't signed before the trade deadline you would have to think he's either asking for more than Treliving wants to pay or he wants to go to free agency. Treliving should have a good feeling on Backlund's worth before the deadline and also know if others (Bennett or Jankowski) can fill in the following season.

I don't think signing him to an extension after the deadline is very likely unless Treliving overpays.

There's a reason most players not signed to an extension by the deadline get traded. This is a hypothetical thread but the fact is if he's not signed by the deadline it's an obvious sign that the Flames may not be able to fit in his asking price.

I would be fine with the Flames waiting though as I personally think he peaked last season and I don't want the Flames committing long term for past performance. The money has to work for the Flames to make it worth a long term deal this is no longer a team that lacks depth at the center position. If Jankowski shows he has potential to be a 2nd line center the Flames could spin that $5 million Backlund may command for a quality RW for the top line. I still feel a deal gets done before the deadline as he seems like a player that wants to stay here rather than chase the money.

If he would sign that, he'd be signed by now.

You can assume he wants a contract at about 8 years. It's his one chance at UFA on his terms, you gotta think he'll maximize that leverage.

He'll only sign a 5-year deal if he desperately wants to be here and Tre plays hardball.

I do know that Calgary won't be a better team without him.

At some stage, in a cap world, al teams have to choose when to "go for it", which generally means forgetting about the cap consequences 5 years down the road when their window has closed.

I don't think its feasible to think you can have a healthy cap situation all the time when contending in a cap world. At some stage, you have to sign some contracts with pending UFA's that you know will stink at the end of the term.

I think that time has come for Calgary.

If Backlund wants 8-years at $6M, I think you need to plug your nose and give it to him. Letting him go will seriously decrease your chances of winning the Cup. He's your shut-down guy and is not readily replaceable.

There is no way that Backlund will get 8 years @ $6M.

He will likely get something close to $6M if he wants a 4 or 5 year deal, but if he wants an 8 year deal, the AAV will be lower than that.

I see an 8 year deal in the $4 - $4.5M range.

He would get $6M on a 7-year deal in UFA I would imagine. I am, of course, assuming he repeats last year.

The question in my mind is not what he is worth, but at what price do you let him walk?

When trying to win a Cup, GM's can't always hold out for what they consider a great deal, or even a good deal. Not if it hurts their Cup chances.

I see Backlund as basically not replaceable. Let's hope his demands are more reasonable than what he could get on the open market. Because it's a tough choice to let him walk.

I agree with this. I hope we are correct.

My posts are about what happens if the above is not true, and he truly wants to be paid UFA going rates.

People forget the human aspect. He's played here for a decade. His friends and family are here. An extra $500,000 makes no difference in his life . It's why very few players move anymore

I think you want to have him locked up by Christmas, otherwise you may want to consider a trade while his value is still quite high (likely get a great return).

More wishful than anything else, but he's established a lot of ties to the community since he's played here.

If Backlund wants an 8 x $6M deal then 100% he's not going to be a Flame after his current deal expires. He's a good player but he doesn't command that term and I personally don't consider him a $6 million player. I'm pretty sure he's going to be more reasonable than this.
